Harry's seventh birthday.

James Potter pov:

James woke up this morning still feeling the effects of firewhisky from last night. He and Sirius spent the last night working late in his office completing their paperwork since it was the end of the month. The only thing he hates about his wicked job as an Auror is the damn paperwork.

Of course as Senior Aurors, both he and Padfoot have assistants to do most of the clerical work but both of them still push doing their limited paperwork to the last possible day. Usually that is the last day of the month but since today is the triplets birthday they had to do it last night.

This led to Sirius being all sad about how their pups are growing up too fast. So both of them spent a few hours just talking and drinking in his office after they were done with the paperwork. When he returned home lily and the rest were already asleep.

Since James woke up alone in the bed he already knew that he was late. A quick tempus told him that it is a little past ten in the morning. James quickly used grooming charms on himself even though he usually prefers to take showers to make him look presentable before rushing to have breakfast with his family.

When he reached there almost everyone is already there sitting at the table. As he quickly made his way beside his wife his mother was already giving him a disapproving look while his father is too busy reading the paper to even notice. Lily is sitting beside Lily Jr trying to feed their two-year-old daughter.

For the triplets birthday, the house-elves have made a grand breakfast will all of the children's favourites.

As James looked around the table he noticed that only his eldest son was missing from the table. "Where's Harry?" He directly asked.

"Harry is still sleeping" answered Lily.

"Leo" his mother suddenly called out and with a crack, the head house-elf appeared beside her. "Go wake up harry and tell him that his family is expecting him to join them for breakfast." His mother ordered Leo.

"It's their birthday, you can at least go easy on the children for today," Lily said to his mother as the house-elf disapparated.

Dorea Potter shook her head "The boy has been sleeping late into the morning for the past few weeks now. It is better to stop such behaviour before it becomes a habit. I was too soft on James and that led to him being a spoiled brat for most of his young life, if you hadn't come around and straightened him out I would have been forced to discipline him by myself."

James almost choked on his bacon hearing that. "Kids if you are done go and get changed because today we are going to visit a muggle zoo and see all kinds of animals that can do all kinds of incredible things even without magic."

He quickly sent away his kids before they can hear any more insults casually thrown his way by his mother and his wife. Both women don't see eye to eye on much but are completely in sync when it comes to pointing out his flaws.

As the kids left all excited to visit a muggle zoo leaving only the grown-ups and little Lily jr at the table.

"Mother can you at least not insult me in front of my children. They think of me as their hero, a brave Auror who protects the world from the darkness." James pleaded but he only got a snort from his mother, he could also hear his wife snicker beside him.

James could only eat his breakfast in silence after that, he looked at his father who was also silently reading the paper without saying a word. James remembers hearing his mother call his father a fool hundreds of times during his childhood, at that time he found that to be bloody hilarious but now they are in the same boat.

James is brought out of his musings by his wife's hand on his shoulder.

"What is it?" he asked seeing his wife hesitate when she clearly had something on her mind.

This must be important because lily is not the type to stay silent about pretty much anything.

"James I think we should probably take harry to St. Mungo's to make sure everything is okay" Lily spoke her voice barely more than a whisper as if she herself is uncertain.

James is shocked to hear this coming from his wife. Harry has always been a healthy child, a lot more silent and mature than the rest of his children but there was never any cause for concern. Seeing the shock on his parent's faces he could gather they also thought the same.

"Where is this even coming from?" James asked his voice louder than he meant it to be.

"You might have not noticed but since he was born harry has never performed any accidental magic. At first, I thought he would start showing signs as he grew older but even now nothing. Charlie and Rose were doing all kinds of things like summoning toys even as babies, the twins were changing the colour of the crib every few months, today little Lily even summoned her pacifier back when I took it from her. Harry has not shown any of that and we still don't know what happened that night in Godric's Hallow. I just want to make sure that my son is okay." Lily started with a firm voice but at the end her voice was more like a plea.

Before James could even respond his mother spoke "Lily Potter! You are one of the smartest witches I have ever known. You know that some magical children don't exhibit any magic till they are much older than Harry. You are letting your emotions rule over your mind it is unbecoming. Little Lily is done with her food go get her cleaned up." His mother didn't raise her voice but her tone was as harsh as it could get.

Lily only nodded and left with their two-year-old daughter.

"James you need to talk to your wife. Harry is an exceptional young boy and more importantly he is fiercely independent. Your wife can't handle that her son doesn't need her as much so she tries to smother him. If she doesn't change this will only push the boy away for his mother." His mother said to him but this time in her usual calm tone.
