Chapter 27

While Patty’s intentions were good, neither visit went as well as any of us had hoped.

“She said I looked horrible and should dress more like a girl.” Lee stomped up to me as if there was something I could do about it. “She gave me makeup for Christmas! I’m ten. I don’t want to wear makeup. Mom doesn’t wear makeup and she’s beautiful. I don’t care what that woman said about sharing it with Mom, so she could look less Hagrid.”

“Haggard,” Patty whispered, but she was smiling.

I put my arm around Lee and held her out a little. I took my time examining her from head to toe. Then I pulled her in and hugged her.

“Well, your grandma might be right. If you had a bright red nose and big white clown lips, maybe your grandma might rethink her idea. What do you say?”

Lee giggled like I thought she would. “Oh, Uncle Dan, you’re so not funny.”

“I know. That’s why I fix bikes instead of perform standup comedy.”
