Chapter 25

Bakers were short, round, and flabby. But Rick didn’t fit the image at all. Yet, he baked some of the best breads, rolls, cookies, cakes, and sweets I’ve ever tasted.

When people heard I repaired bikes, they expected tattoos until they learned I repaired children’s bikes and preferred working on them and seeing my tiny clients’ eyes light up with joy. Then the stereotype was smashed and they were left without another one to poke me into.

Now that I thought about it, I wondered if Rick and Patty’s vicious mother Cat had been left adrift without a stereotype for me. The only hole she could slot me into was gay, and she didn’t like that one bit since she was still trying reconcile her son’s fitting there too.

With a start, I realized that was another thing I liked about Rick. He, too, didn’t fit the gay mold or the baker mold.
