5 | Bry II

After that day, both Bry and Hugh met with each other and started to know about each other over a year. Hugh always gives Bry food that is enough for two humans for three days and he mostly gives vegetables and fruits, and Bry will hunt wild hares for him in exchange for the food that he gives her, even though it's nothing compared to what he gives her sometimes.

Today was also a day like that, and as they came to an end with their talks, Bry looked at Hugh and asked "Hey Hugh, I think I'm in love with you. And I want you to marry me."

Hugh just blinked a couple of times after hearing that abrupt confession, so it took a couple of minutes for him to think straight again. Then looking at her he said "You do know that I have a wife, children and grandchildren. And also that I'm a century old, right?"

"I do." Bry replied.

"Then you should know that, even if we marry, there is a low chance of having kids?" Hugh asked her.

"Yes, I know that." Bry said.

"Even if I say that I will marry you, do you think that your father will agree to that?" Hugh asked her again.

"That I don't know. But we can always try right." Saying that she stood up from the ground and stepped on his legs and came face to face with Hugh.

Looking into her eyes Hugh asked one final time, to see if she would change her mind "You do know that it will hurt unlike anything else, right?"

Hearing that question, her lips twitched and with a sigh she captured his lips for a couple of seconds and said "Does that answer your questions?"

Chuckling at that, Hugh just nodded with a smile on his face. She returned a beaming smile to him too.

Then Hugh just picked her up and placed her on Manny and he mounted right behind her. They then rode to where her home is situated for the past year. On the way, Bry just went on about her father and other things.

As they were nearing the place, they saw smoke rising in the air, not the one that could be seen during cooking, but a black smoke that will be produced after burning a lot of things. Seeing that Hugh stopped Manny from moving forward then dismounted him with Bry. As they got down Hugh looked at Manny and said "Hide. Now."

Without making any sounds, Manny moved away from the area to hide. Then with Bry, Hugh moved towards the place where the smoke was coming from in haste. As they reached there they started to hear muffled screams, hearing the scream Bry had a bad premonition and as they got a clear view of the situation, their breath hitched. Because the black smoke was coming out of the tent used by Bry and her father, and her father is being held by three men and a fourth one is punching him left and right.

Seeing that Hugh spoke "Bry, calm down. Nothing will happen to your father. I promise you."

Hearing that Bry just nodded, even though all she wanted to do was to run straight to the man and beat him up.

Getting affirmation from Bry, Hugh spoke again "I'll get them from their backs, you distract them."

Again Bry nodded at him, and Hugh left Bry there and circled around the men and came upon their rear. As he reached there he gave a signal to her, and Bry came out to the clearing shouting "What the heck are you guys doing?"

Hearing that question, the four men and her father looked at her. Seeing her, Bry's father shouted "Get away from here Bry! They're here for you! Agh"

He didn't get to finish what he wanted to say but one of the men punched him in the face and said "Shut it old man."

Then the man who had been punching him before spoke "As he said, we're here for you. Unfortunately, you were not here so we decided to leave a gift for you."

"What do you want with me?" Bry asked as she saw Hugh slowly making his way towards the three men holding her father.

"What else but you." The man said with a hysterical laugh, then pausing he said "And also to know where you get your food from. We have been observing this area for a while, but we haven't seen any kind bird that is similar to the ones you bring. So yeah, we're here for your body and your food."

When he said the food part Bry thought that if she gave them enough food they would just leave her father alone, but that notion was buried away right after he said about having her serve him in bed. That was also the last straw for Hugh, as he just jumped from the back with a roar and his claws out.

Hearing the roar similar to a beast, all of them looked behind only to see red, because the furthest man to the rear just lost his head and his body slumped to the ground. As they were busy cleaning their faces to get a clear view, Hugh took hold of Bry's father and moved backwards.

Using the opportunity created by Hugh, Bry started to kill the remaining three men with ease by slitting their throat. After the deed was done she walked towards her father who was standing petrified near Hugh, reaching him she hugged and said "I'm sorry."

Hearing that, her father came out from his stupor and said "It's not your fault." Then looking at Hugh who was still looking around for any more danger, he asked his daughter "So, care to explain?"

Knowing what her father is implying about, she nodded and was about to tell him everything but stopped when Hugh signalled her to stop and Hugh spoke "It's not safe here anymore. Let's move." As he said that he whistled and Manny came to the clearing.

Placing both father and daughter pairs on Manny, Hugh also mounted him and started to move towards North.

As they were riding, Bry asked "Hugh, why did you leave those men who have been hiding in the trees? They will be spreading what happened here to the world."

"You don't have to worry about that." Then eying her he said "Dead Man Tell No Tales."
