Gabriela.

Gabriela is a remarkably powerful angel who grew up under the guidance of her mentors, each of whom carefully helped shape her into a powerful weapon against demons. Everything seemed to be going well, and Gabriela was soon to be released into the world when one of her mentors realized that as skilled as she was, she had no compassion. In an effort to instill empathy in her before its too late, Gabriela has been sent to earth to live amongst humans, with her abilities sealed. But will she actually learn what it means to care, or will her ingrained fixation on battle lead her astray?

Chapter Fifteen

Gabriela waited — admittedly less than patiently — for the demon to explain to her what he had in mind when he had made the offer for them to partner up temporarily.

As he started to explain all of the reasons he could think of for why she should team up with him short-term, some part of her wanted to cut him off. She hadn't asked to be convinced, and she trusted almost nothing that came out of his mouth anyway. If she was going to do what he suggested, it would be based on if she thought he actually had a decent plan. The only reason she didn't cut him off was for the chance that he wouldn't start talking again if she did. If she agreed to his plan and then somehow offended him later, then fine. She could stay quiet long enough to hear him out though.

And as much as she hated to admit it, even privately, once she heard his suggestion, it actually did make sense. It would mean that they could both get off clean, without any trouble, and fairly quickly at that, whereas her way would probably include brute force, and it would lead to annoyances later down the road. It would annoy the demon too, which she really wouldn't mind at all, but the trade-off wasn't really one she was willing to take as her first option.

"Okay, we'll do it your way," Gabriela finally amended.

His little dig at her didn't really spark her temper, but she honestly had little to no respect for the human authorities. If it wouldn't have gotten her wounded earlier at the park, she probably wouldn't have paid them more than a passing glance. And she wasn't exactly worried about them parting ways after this either. She needed a little time to regroup before she re-challenged him.

"We were play-fighting. It was all a show, which the authorities interrupted. We didn't think it would be taken that seriously, since an umbrella was used instead of a harmful weapon," Gabriela then offered after a lengthened silence.
