Issue #11

The sparring session would consist of 7 rounds. All the members of the Hellions were participating while everyone except for Cypher would battling on the side of the New Mutants. Each of the rounds was decided on beforehand.

Mirage vs Empath

Tarot vs Karma

Sunspot vs Beef

Warlock vs Bevatron

Roulette vs Cannonball

Catseye vs Wolfbane

Leviathan vs Magik

As soon as he saw the matchup, Jack already knew which team would win. Most of his team had been given their worst matchups. The first match was pretty boring to watch for everyone. Both opponents could only do the same thing in different ways.

Mirage made Empath face his worst fears. Due to his mental instability, this power was even more effective on him. Empath countered by forcing intense feelings of fear in Mirage. This was barely a competition between powers but was more of a competition of willpower. And the winner was Mirage. Empath was the first to pass out.

The second round was even worse for the Hellions team. Tarot summoned several figures from her tarot cards before Karma took over her body. Karma then commanded the Tarots to beat up Tarot's body. Before the first blow landed, Karma left the body and was able to see Tarot get knocked to the ground with a single punch.

"One punch! Haha. She went down in one punch!" Sunspot exclaimed from the side

After Tarot was carried away, Sunspot flew into the middle of the room. Beef ran up to the solar mutant and tried to punch him. Sunspot was able to easily dodge. The pair continued this several times where Beef would try to land a hit but Sunspot would dodge. Once he saw the taller teen begin to get tired out, Sunspot gave him one punch to the face which sent the giant flying and unconscious.

With the score now 0-3 in the New Mutants' favor, Jack was sure that his team would lose. He held was confident in Tarot and had some hope for Beef but with their losses, he was pretty sure that it was all over.

'And I need to take all the blame since I'm the leader. I should probably pass off my position eventually. But if I do, I need to follow the orders of one of them. That sounds even worse than another one of Emma's lectures.'

Jack wasn't even paying attention to the next match that would occur. To his surprise, he heard Sharon and Jennifer cheer. When his attention came back out of his mind, he saw that Bevatron had been able to short circuit Warlock and secure a victory.

But this was not the last surprise Jack would get. During the fight between Roulette and Cannonball, the Hellions came out on top as well. Roulette managed to hit Cannonball with one of her unlucky bolts. This caused his powers to short out mid-flight and crash into the wall. The New Mutant was knocked unconscious which ended up in Roulette's victory.

The following match was supposed to be between Catseye and Wolfsbane but Jack was quick to stop it. Not because he cared about losing but because the match was too dangerous.

"Both of them are feral mutants. That means they are all about biting and tearing. In their animal forms, they also have more animal instincts. Not to mention they are literally a cat and dog. If we allow them to fight, it may end in death or even severe injuries for one if not both of them," Jack explained to the others

Karma and Mirage were quick to agree with his idea. Wolfsbane was their youngest and had difficulty controlling her animal impulses in her lupine form without outside interference. If she had to deal with the factors that Jack had mentioned, it was very dangerous for her.

This round was counted as a tie making the score 3-4 in the New Mutants' favor. The final round would decide if the match would be a tie or loss for the Hellions. Either way, Emma would surely scold them.

'Knowing I will get a scolding no matter what, I would usually surrender. But this girl makes my blood boil. I wanna see what she is made of.'

Jack and the blonde Russian walked to the center of the room. They were surrounded on all sides by their teammates. This was going to be the most exciting match yet so none of them wanted to miss a second of it.

Magik summoned a sword from nowhere and pointed it at Jack. The blade of the sword seemed to be made of blue energy while silver armor covered her right arm. This was Magik's Soulsword. Forged from a piece of her soul and regalia of the ruler of Limbo. Although the sword couldn't only affect the mystical, it was still a sight to behold.

Jack unsheathed the magic dagger he looted from a de... picked up when he went to a pawn shop and held it in front of him. He wanted to make this a fair fight. If he was able to just pass through her sword with his normal weapons without issue, it would not be as fun.

With their weapons ready, the duo charged at each other. Their first clash sent magical sparks when their weapons collided. The pair backed away from each other when they saw that they were equally matched.

Jack looked down at his knife and was surprised to see the large crack in it. The edge had also been dulled severely.

'Is that magic sword a complete anti-magic sword? I thought it was just limited to magical beings cause of a protective charm not to harm humans!'

Jack gave up the thought of a fair fight. He tried to reach into Magik's mind but was surprised when he saw that he could not enter it at all. He couldn't even sense it.

'And she's immune to telepathy?! What else can she do?'

Jack began to use the various abilities that he gained from animals to take the fight to close range. Using his armor to block her strikes and claws to tear through her armor, Jack was able to gain the advantage for a moment.

Just as he was about to land his finishing blow, Magik fired a beam of eldritch energy that knocked Jack off of his feet. If not for his beetle armor, Jack's defeat would have happened then and there.

No longer willing to risk his victory, Jack went all out for one final assault. He knew that if he failed to finish this fight in the next move, it was over.

Jack combined his [Sonic Punch], [Ant's Strength], and [Bio-Shock] to give a single punch that was both very fast and did elemental damage. But before the blow could land, a portal opened up in front and Jack. The next thing he knew, he was inside the dark space and choosing another ability.
