Flames of redemption

"You're such a bastard!" "I am a bastard," he agreed, leaning even closer to her, "but I'm your bastard, kitten." Someone who's not average, not ordinary, not trying to fit in, not....'normal', as defined by society. And deep inside, she felt the weight of eyes upon her, watching her every move. Questions lingered and haunted her mind: Who was the observer? And what motives laid behind those captivating gazes?

Chapter 14

The door opened and Regan flinched. Vesper was standing there with a messy look. Her hair were disheveled, the opposite of what they were at school; sleek straight, her eyes were drowsy. She was wearing short pajamas. When Regan saw that, she realized she was on pajamas too. The girl cringed embarrassingly at herself. She probably looked even worse. But who cared about looks in the chaos that she had founded herself in?"Regan, what are you doing here?" Vesper asked, yawning and then made a confused face. The girl in question swore at herself for waking the other up from sleep in such an hour, "I'm such an idiot and a coward!""Vesper, I really need your help, call the police, hurry!" she urged with a shaking voice."Wait, what happened, why should I call the police?""Someone is in my house, and my aunt is inside!" Regan said panicked and lowered her voice to not wake any other people up. It should be noted that in the silence of the night, people could wake up easily if odd raised voices are heard. That was the least she wanted."Are you serious Regan? Who is in your house?" Vesper asked, folding her arms."I am dead serious,I saw it, please call the police, I don't have my phone...!" The scared girl said.Vesper on the other hand didn't seem very affected. She took it as a not important matter, knowing that Regan was paranoid. She stepped out in her slippers and closed the main door behind her."Regan, come on, you must be exaggerating. How about I come in your house and check it?" Vesper suggested putting her hand into Regan's shoulder but then jerked it away faster then the wind. Her shoulder was hotter than the spoon, when placed on the oven. Vesper waved her hand on the air and sighed frustrated."What?" Regan said not understanding why she did so. She acted as if she burnt her hand."Nevermind. So, how come we go and check your house for anything wrong?""Okay."Vesper, bored and angry from the girl behind her, walked in annoyance to her house. She opened the main door, which wasn't locked. Regan followed her from behind, scared and terrified.Vesper entered first and stood in the kitchen. Everything looked normal and fine. Meanwhile when Regan entered, she felt a weird presence. At that time the girl wasn't even sure of herself. She had no idea what was going on through her."So, where is that someone in your house?" Her short tempered friend asked with a tired look, "what's the point of waking me up over nothing?"Regan stood there ashamed. She knew that the 'thing' meant to terrify and mess with her, and of course, not show in front of others. She was going to answer her but footsteps were heard from the staircase. Her heart nearly went away until she saw Monica coming downstairs."What on earth are you both doing in the middle of the night?" Monica questioned with a tired voice. When Regan saw her, she let a long breath. No matter what fear she felt, Monica was safe at least. Well, how would Regan explain this?"You told me your aunt was sleeping!" Vesper hissed in her ear in low mumble making her flinch."I...I-""Okay, so, Regan came in my house and told me someone broke in your house, aunt Monica," Vesper interrupted."What? Regan is this true?""I swear s-someone was here, I saw the b-bathroom's door close itself, I heard noises and saw it's sh-shadow!" The frightened girl explained, rushing in her words. She hated she stuttered but she was hell scared now. When saying this, she knew there was no way that Monica would believe. Regan felt exposed like no way before. She somehow could sense it or him making fun of her. Or this was just fabled irrationally in her mind."And why I didn't hear or saw anything?" Her aunt asked sitting on the couch.Vesper did the same."Because you were sleeping!""And why you weren't? I gave you these pills.""Pills?" Vesper asked confused."This person was in our house and you wanted me to sleep? I could still sense it's presence."Regan regretted saying the last sentence. Both her friend and aunt were bewildered. Vesper's face suddenly frowned."Whose presence?" Vesper asked."I'm talking about that person who broke in."She referred it as a person, there weren't any better choices of words."Okay girls, stop it already, you're both tired and woken up from sleep. There's no person in our house. Vesper, get back in your house my dear. Forget about this." Monica said as she eyed Regan with a reproachful look.Vesper got up and mumbled goodbye."Regan, go to your room and sleep." Monica strictly said."But-""No buts, go now and sleep," she said sharply.Regan did as she was ordered, despite that her heart started pounding rapidly when she came in front of the white door, the entrance to her so lovely room. The girl heard her aunt's footsteps, she gulped and entered in her room.Everything that she saw and heard there lashed in her mind. Wherever her eyes landed on the walls, illusions of shadows appeared. The helpless girl was angry at her aunt for not even slightly believing and for looking like a fool in her friend's eyes.It was a bit hard to be believed, but still, shouldn't Monica have tried?Fear engulfed her in all directions. She panicked if the thing was still in her house or worse, in her room. Undoubtedly, Regan felt a weird energy or presence. The only way she'd call it. It had never happened before. If she was being felt watched before, was even ignoring that now. And she was also forgetting about the roses matter, Mike or whoever was involved in that. Each thing was scarier than the other. But she knew something: she couldn't stay in her room anymore. She was afraid to even stay in the house, the place she once considered perfect. She searched around the room for her iPhone, it was on the bed and she saw the time. It was 3:13 am.The scared girl had no intention to sleep. If she had been letting things slip, then this wasn't going to be it. It wasn't an illusion, a delusion and she wanted to find a way to prove it to her aunt. When thinking deeper, the labyrinth in her mind held a vague way out. And this way out led to the unknown in her thrilling dream.Somehow, Regan thought that he could be making all this mess, maybe just messing with her mind. She wanted to find the real reason. Of course, without thinking she was crazy. The more she stayed in the room, the more danger awakened. The sense of negativity grew on her and she felt like suffocating. She finally stormed away from her room, but then closed the door quietly, not wanting Monica to hear. She turned on the lights, but damn, in a flash, everything turned pitch black. The bulb's light faded fast and the girl realized it was an energy problem."Oh, damnit!"She had her phone on hand, so the flashlight could be used but the phone was dead. She couldn't fathom it, nor did she had time to analyse why or how the phone's battery drained that quickly. That was the last thing needed. Panic and fear spread again in her whole being."Shit, that's not fair!" she whispered in frustration. She didn't know if her fear was coming from the darkness; after all she hadn't been very afraid of the dark before, but her mental state wasn't the best now. Her heart beat crazily and she could feel sweat prickling her forehead. What lay in the dark? What secrets did darkness hold?Naturally, these all made the girl even more frightened. It was like her fears wouldn't ever end.The most frustrating thing was that she couldn't see anything. The corridor's windows were shuttered and lights from the road couldn't enter. Or maybe even lights from the road had a disconnection problem.Regan felt something dark as she walked irrationally, having to trace."N...no," she shook her head. Was that a creepy horror game? She walked, halting in her steps. The girl knew the way around, the corridor wasn't very big after all. But nothing could be seen in the dullness.Soon she imposed to stop because she hit a wall. At least, that's what she thought. A wave of strangeness and mystery washed over her.Out of the blue, she felt something stroking her hair. She jumped away immediately, and she couldn't see anything. Her heartbeats were out of place and her legs felt like ice. She couldn't yell or move, just like she was trapped and frozen. She knew something, that she would never forget this experience. Feeling like her whole being would be swallowed into the nothingness. Feeling like, if she dared a step, she'd fall into an infinite abyss....***"Regan, wake up! Regan...." Monica half yelled to her niece from the kitchen. When she heard no movement, she yelled the same and shaked her with a light grip. When Regan tried to open her eyes, they felt heavy and she rubbed them strongly. The blurriness washed away itself and the girl saw Monica's confused expression."Good morning..." she crackled, trying to get up, her voice hoarse. She looked around and saw she was sleeping on the couch; in the living room."Dear, are you okay? Why did you sleep here?" Monica asked.Regan looked elsewhere, attempting to remember how and why she slept there."Yeah... I'm okay, I don't know why I slept here, I've must been to tired.""You woke up on three, that's why," Monica said."I can't quite recall this," Regan said, her head throbbing."Nevermind dear, you were stressed, that's why. Come on, get ready for school."Regan sighed frustrated and got up from the couch. She noticed earlier that she was covered with her blue blanket which had been in the closet before. Monica went upstairs, leaving her to get ready. The only thing her mind recalled was that she woke after a dream. Then, slowly she remembered everything else."Oh my God!"All the memories spread over her, just like a light that makes a single entrance inside a dark cavern. When she tried to get up a sudden wave of energy washed over her. It caused her to lose balance and feel dizzy. Her mind hurt from the night's occurrences. She didn't want to forget, she wanted it to be all a delusion. But when it was so vivid, there was no way they were all imaginations.Regan's memories ended at the recall of her walking in the dark corridor. Then, everything was vanished from her mind. She didn't remember how she slept on the couch, or what happened after she was terrified to the core; the girl's heart started to pound rapidly when remembered that something had touched her hairs. She held her hands to her face and reasoned that perhaps she fainted from the excessive fear. But then, she thought about the blanket. She rarely used that blanket. And it was weird, how did she fall asleep there? How did she went up in her room to get something to cover herself with? She could remember anything and it was driving her crazy. Maybe she had walked on sleep, but even that, was driving her crazy
