Chapter 3: Voice in the Night Part 2

Time skip: That evening..

In the city, Mako arrives at the meeting place, Quoong's Cuisine a little early. A trolley goes by in the background. He looks up, dumbstruck at how fancy the place is and unconsciously grabs the scarf around his neck before looking over himself and walking into the establishment. He's greeted by a very well dressed man who bows in greeting.

"Ah, welcome to Quong's Cuisine. Master Mako." The man greeted him with a bow.

Mako raised an eyebrow, confused.

"Master?", He asked.

The scene then switches to the well dressed man helping Mako to change into more appropriate attire for the restaurant. Some time later Mako is dressed in a nice tuxedo like outfit with a clean shirt and pants. He takes his favorite red scarf and wraps it around his neck. The butler or waiter looks at the scarf and tries to replace it before Mako grabs his wrist, preventing him from doing so.

"The scarf stays.," Mako said seriously.

The man bows again.

"As you wish sir. This way, please.," The man said gesturing for Mako follow him.

Mako does so and folows the butler. When he is brought into the dining area, he immediately notices how well dressed everyone is. He is escorted to a certain table where Asami, dressed in a very beautiful black dress waited for him. Next her though was Khanna in a sparkling blue dress with silver and gold trimming, high heeled shoes, and wearing owl feather earrings. Her hair seemed like it was shining or glistening as she waved to the teen. Mako couldn't help but to stare at Khanna. Asami was beautiful for sure, but he couldn't take his eyes off of Khanna for some reason.

"Are you just going to stand there like a deer in headlights or are you coming over here to sit down?," Khanna asked with a smirk.

"Huh? Oh. R-Right!," Mako said before being escorted to the table.

The scene pans to their table where Asami is seen to be talking to Mako.

"I've been such a big pro bending fan for as long as I can remember. I think I've kept up with every game so far this season.," Asami said.

"All of them? Wow. Honestly there were a few of them I wish you hadn't seen.," Mako said. "What about you, Khanna?"

Khanna shrugged and answered honestly.

"I'm afraid i'm a little out of the loop there. I only recently came to Republic City, so I'm afraid I haven't seen any pro bending matches myself.," She answered.

Asami raised an eyebrow.

"Really? I'd assumed you would have at least heard about it before.," Asami said surprised.

Khanna shook her head.

"Unfortunately no. Fresh out of luck there. Where I come from, the sport is... shall we say... far more barbaric you could say.," She answered.

Now Mako was curious.

"How so?," Mako and Asami asked.

"Think of it as more of a test to see who's the strongest... kind of like a mix between a martial arts tournament and a gladiator ring. No one was seriously hurt though.," Khanna answered.

"Sounds pretty intense.," Asami commented.

Khanna smiled remembering how she competed against her cousin in the final match nearly every year.

"Yeah, but it was fun... while it lasted.,"Khanna said somberly.

"What happened?" Mako asked.

Khanna sighed.

"War.," Khanna said.

"War?," They asked.

She nodded.

"Yup. A long and bloody war with what was at the time the remnants of the Earth Kingdom Empire. Unfortunately, my people lost that war.," Khanna said.

"They lost?," Mako asked.

Khanna nodded.

" Lost to an opponent we underestimated, our people were put into slavery and... the rest have been scattered ever since. Especially since the Equalists showed up. Now there aren't many of us left.," She answered.

"What brought you to Republic City?," Mako asked.

Khanna looked at them.

"I heard that my cousins were here, I've been looking for them for a long time. So, here I am.," Khanna said.

When she noticed the looks they were giving her, she cleared her throat.

"Sorry, didn't mean to bring the mood down so much.," She said with a somber smile. "Anyways, continue. What about those matches?,"

They switched the topic back to the pro bending matches, recognizing that the history of her people was a bit of a painful subject to talk about.

"Don't be ridiculous Mako, you're amazing. I can't wait to see you play in the upcoming tournament.," Asami said.

Mako looked away, a little ashamed.

"Yeah, well.. maybe next year.," He said.

This confused Asami.

"What do you mean?," She asked. "You made it in, didn't you?"

"Yeah... It just isn't in the cards for us right now.," Mako replied.

Asami reached over and put her hand on top of Mako's. Recognizing that maybe she was intruding on their alone time, Khanna excused herself.

They both looked at her.

"Don't worry you two, I'm just going to go to the restroom. Feel free to spend some more time alone until I get back, okay?," She said with a wink.

Mako just stared at Khanna as she walked off.

Asami looked at him with a smile.

"You like Khanna, don't you?," Asami asked.

"What? N-No!... Okay, m-maybe...," Mako admitted.

Asami laughed.

"It's okay, Mako. Khanna's really pretty, I can see why you would like her. Plus... her story is..," Asami trailed off.

"Really sad.," He finished.

"Yeah. I had no idea she went through so much. Anyways.. Tell me, what's wrong?," Asami asked him.

Mako sighed and shook his head.

"We don't have the cash to annie up for the championship pot, so it looks like we're out of the running.," Mako admitted.

"Well that's not fair.," Asami said with a bit of a somber look.

A waiter then came by with their meal.

"Pardon me, Miss Sato. Your Main course.," The waiter said before taking the covers of the trays off and walking away.

Mako blinked for a moment when he realized what the waiter just called Asami.

"Miss Sato? You wouldn't happen to be related to Hiroshi Sato, the creator of the Satomobile?" Mako asked.

"Yeah, he's my dad.," Asami answered.

"Get outta town!," Mako replied surprised.

Asami smiled and spoke again.

"I'm serious. You wanna meet him?," Asami asked before taking a drink from her cup.

"Meet the most successful captain of industry in all of Republic City? Yeah, I'll take you up on that.," Mako replied.

Khanna came back a few moments later, right after Mako and Asami had their conversation. She raised an eyebrow confused.

"Sorry for taking so long. Hm? Did I miss something?," Khanna asked.

Mako looked to Khanna with a grin before speaking.

"Yeah, you kinda did. You're never gonna believe this, Khanna..," Mako began.

Khanna smirked at him.

"Try me.," She said.

She sat down and Mako began to explain the details concerning the conversation they just had while she was using the restroom.

The Next Morning....

Bolin arrived onto Air Temple Island and was seen walking towards Korra, who was seen to be rubbing the belly of her polar beardog.

"Hello, fellow teammate! Missed you at practice this week.," Bolin said.

"Oh, hey Bolin.," Korra greeted. "Sorry about that."

"Ah, that's alright.," He said.

As soon as he said that, a gust of wind assaulted them causing them to shield their eyes.

"Uh... What was that?!," Bolin asked a little freaked out.

Korra looked to the side where the wind was coming from.

"Oh, that's probably just Sarai and one of her brothers sparring again.," Korra said like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Truthfully, she'd gotten used to it by now, so it didn't really shock or surprise her anymore. Bolin looked and sure enough, saw Sarai and Roy clashing swords before disappearing and clashing again. He had a brief glimpse of Sarai and was startled by her beauty. She was young, but she was as pretty of girl as he had ever seen, no, probably even moreso. He then remembered, she was the girl that helped to rescue him from Ammon. He then went back to talking to Korra.

"So.. we're probably out of the tournament unless a whole bunch of money just magically drops out of the sky by tomorrow. Anyways, reason I came by was to give you this! Ta da!," Bolin said offering Korra a rose and a bag with a fruitcake in it.

"Thanks Bolin, but what's this for?," Korra asked.

Bolin adopted a thoughtful expression.

"I can't remember.. hmm... Ah! That's right! You guys saved me from Ammon, so uh... thanks. Oh and uh... If you could give that red haired girl over there a message for me?," Bolin said fidgeting slightly.

Korra smirked.

"Sure Bolin. What do you want me to tell her?,"Korra asked.

"Oh just uh.. T-Thanks for you know.. helping out to save me from Ammon and stuff.," Bolin said looking away.

Korra chuckled lightly.

"Sure Bolin, but are you sure you don't want to just tell her yourself?," Korra asked smirking.

"Are you kidding? I-I can't tell her that it'll sound weird and she'll think I'm strange ..." Bolin started before a voice from behind him interrupted his rambling.

"And why would I think you're strange, mister Bolin?," A feminine voice asked.

Bolin froze and started sweating while looking at Korra.

"She's right behind me, isn't she?," he asked nervously.

Korra nodded.

"Ah! Oh uh didn't see you there! How much did you hear?," Bolin asked nervous.

Sarai smiled before accepting the second rose Bolin unconsciously offered before he could think about what he was doing.

"I think pretty much all of it. And... you're quite welcome Bolin. It was no big deal.," She smiled at him.

Bolin could feel his heart beating when Sarai smiled at him and he didn't know why. Another voice interrupted his thoughts, causing the 4 teens gathered to turn around.

"Delivery for Avatar Korra.," An older man said.

They could tell that he was a delivery person based on how he was dressed.

"Tarlock sends his regards, and asks you to reconsider his offer.," The delivery man said.

Korra rolled her eyes and spoke.

"And you can tell Tarlock that I still haven't changed my mind.," Korra said dismissively.

"I see...," the delivery man said before walking away.

Bolin turned to Korra.

"Who's this Tarlock guy? Is he bothering you, cuz if he is... He and I can have a word.," Bolin said putting his fist into an open palm.

"No Bolin calm down. He's just someone Tenzin works with on the city council.,"Korra said.

Bolin relaxed.

"Oh that's good then. I actually like that much better.," Bolin remarked putting his hand to his chin trying to look cool.

This only served to make Sarai giggle at how silly he looked just then. Roy just smiled and lightly chuckled while a single thought came to his mind.

"Never Change Bolin, at least... for my sister's sake. Stay yourself.," He thought.

Elsewhere...

Inside the factory known for making Satomobiles, Mako, Khanna, and Asami were seen meeting with an older gentleman who was well dressed in a black suit with brown pants, shoes and matching hair. His mustache matched his slightly hair that had specks of gray in it. This was the owner of the factory, Hiroshi Sato.

"What do you think of my little operation here?," Mr Sato asked.

"It's very impressive, Mister Sato.," Mako said.

Khanna was looking at it, and while she was impressed, there was a worried or far off look in her eyes.

"And what do you think, young lady?," Hiroshi asked.

She turned and gave him a soft smile.

"Huh? Oh sorry. It's quite impressive. It... just reminds me of my homeland. One my people can never get back unfortunately..," Khanna said somberly.

Asami noticed the sad look on the young woman's face and went to comfort her.

"Khanna..." Asami said sadly noticing the tears on her friend's face.

Khanna wiped them away quickly before responding.

"I'm sorry, Mister Sato. I don't mean to make the mood seem all gloomy.," Khanna said slightly sniffling.

"No, please it's alright. I can tell that you have been through a lot of very unpleasant things from what my daughter tells me. And please, call me Hiroshi.," Hiroshi said.

Deciding to switch the subject, Hiroshi looked to Mako.

"So.. I understand you're abit strapped for cash, correct?," He asked Mako.

"Well...," Mako said as he looked away.

"Young man, it's alright and it is nothing to be ashamed of. I too came from humble beginnings.," Hiroshi said before continuing.

"Why when I was your age I was a shoe shiner and all I had to my name was an idea, the Satomobile. (camera pans to show one of the Satomobiles) Now, I was fortunate enough to meet someone who believed in me and in my work ethic. They gave me enough money i needed to get my idea off the ground. And, as you can see I built the entire Future Industries Empire from that one selfless loan.," He said as the camera pans to show the rest of the factory and the Satomobiles being worked on and assembled).

Asami then went to stand beside her father again after calming down Khanna, who was now more like herself.

"Dad, stop bragging. Just tell Mako the good news.," Asami told her father.

"What good news?," Mako asked confused.

Hiroshi chuckled before explaining.

"Well, my daughter passionately told me all about your hard earned success in the pro bending arena and about your team's current financial... stumbling block. Now I'd hate to see you lose your chance at winning the championship, just because you're short a few yuans or so. That's why I'm going to sponsor the Fire Ferrets in the tournament!," Hiroshi told him.

Mako stepped back, slightly surprised.

"Are you serious?," He asked pleasantly surprised.

"He's serious. My dad's going to cover your entry for the championship pot.," Asami answered.

Mako smiled.

"That... That is good news!", Mako said now happy.

"There's just one catch: you all have to wear the Future Industries logo on your uniforms.," Hiroshi said.

Mako smiled, he was ecstatic that they finally had the financial backing to compete in the tournament. It was something that'd been plaguing his mind for weeks until just today.

"I'll even tattoo it in my chest if you want.," Mako said excited.

Hiroshi and Asami chuckled at Mako's antics.

"Thank you both, so much! I promise The Fire Ferrets will make the most of this opportunity.," Mako said shaking the hand of both Hiroshi and Asami.

He turned towards Khanna. To which she simply smirked before speaking her own two cents on the matter.

"Yeah, I get it. This is a huge deal for you, tough guy. Just don't let all this fanfare go to your head, eh? There's an old proverb my people have and it goes something like this: "Be humble in all you do, for the pride of man is at its greatest before a fall."," She said.

Mako smiled back at the young woman and laughed a little nervously.

Air Temple Island a little while later...

Tenzin was just arriving home after a long day in meetings with City Council, only to find a nice car had been delivered to his doorstep. His kids, of course were loving the new gift. While not quite children anymore, they still acted as children when observing the car. Tenzin merely shook his head in dissapproval as he walked away. He knew what these gifts were for. They were, no doubt a concerted effort by Tarlock to sway the Avatar's decision into joining his task force. He expected to find Korra training by herself, except today... she wasn't. She was seen to be sparring with.. Odyn of all people? He certainly wasn't expecting that. Korra was trying and just barely dodging the heavy blows being sent her way by Odyn.

A series of punches, elbow jabs, and palms that she was barely avoiding is what he saw. With wind whipping around them, due to Odyn's powerful blows, Tenzin could see that the Avatar was struggling against her vastly more experienced training partner. Unfortunately, she flailed when her legs were swept from underneath her. Just when Tenzin thought about intervening, Odyn stopped his blow towards her face short, causing a gust of wind to rush past them and split the the body of water behind them momentarily.

"Wide open, again... In a real fight, you would've been dead long before that ,Avatar. Learn to sense your opponent's movements more naturally. But.. I think that's enough for today, someone wants to speak to you.," Odyn said motioning towards Tenzin.

Tenzin nodded towards the young man before he walked off. Odyn turned his head towards Korra and said one last thing before walking away.

"We'll pick up where we left off later, get some rest for now.," Odyn said as he walked off.

"I see Tarlock's gifts are getting more and more extravagant.," Tenzin said. "Are.. you alright Korra? You're still shaking.,"

"Huh? O-Oh y-yeah! I think... I'm just now realizing how terrifying Odyn really is as a fighter... Good thing we're not enemies, I think I'd already be dead if we were..,"Korra said trembling slightly. "And yeah, seems like Tarlock just doesn't know how to take no for an answer."

Tenzin looked at Korra in concern.

"Korra, are you doing alright?," He asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine.," Korra replied.

Tenzin sat down on the steps to the outdoor training ring Korra used was, he spoke in a tone like he was talking to one of his children.

"Why don't you rest for awhile?," He asked gesturing for Korra to come and sit down.

Korra got the message and walked over to sit down.

"I'm glad you turned down Tarlock, but I just wanted to make sure that it was for the right reason.," Tenzin said.

"I'm just.. really focused on my air bending right now...," Korra replied.

"Right... That's what you said.," Tenzin responded.

He then continued.

"You know Korra, it's okay to be scared. The whole city is rightfully frightened because of what's been going on. What's most important right now is to talk about our fears. Because if we don't, it could throw us out of balance.," Tenzin advised.

Korra looked away, absorbing what Tenzin was telling her. It hit her deep on the inside, because the reality was.. she was afraid. But, she was also the Avatar. What would people think if they knew that even the Avatar was afraid of Ammon?

"I'm always here, if you want to talk.," Tenzin said as he got up and began to walk away, leaving Korraa to her thoughts.

Korra sighed and began to think on what Tenzin said. Odyn came back shortly after Tenzin left, he could tell that something was on Korra's mind. Training was out of the question, she wouldn't be focused if her mind was somewhere else. She noticed that he simply came and sat down next to her. She looked towards him as he spoke.

"Something on your mind, Avatar?," He asked.

She looked down, hugging her knees.

"You.. could say that.," She replied.

"I believe I can guess what it is that's on your mind. But.. That's a wall you're going to have to overcome on your own. I can help you get going in the right direction, but it's ultimately up to you to decide for yourself.," Odyn said.

The two just sat there in silence, Korra taking in what Odyn was telling her. Jinora and Ikki were of course slyly smiling as they watched the two of them, they thought it was cute how Korra just listened while Odyn talked to her.

She looked toward him.

"So.. uh... I know it's none of my business to ask this, but what about you? Something on your mind, Odyn?," Korra asked.

Odyn considered being honest with her, but he felt that would be rude, Korra was genuinely curious about him. He sighed.

"All of what's happening really. Criminals being suddenly taken out, the fear around the city, to even the Equalists, and... "that man".," Odyn said with noticeable venom in his voice.

Korra raised an eyebrow and dared to ask:

"You're talking about Ammon, aren't you?," Korra asked.

Odyn sighed and nodded while clenching his fists in anger.

"Yes... Him. ," Odyn said a subtle but noticeable bit of vitriol in his voice.

"Sounds like.. you have some history with him. What did he do to you?," Korra asked.

"He... and his people publicly vilified my kind and because of their propaganda and his "rampage or quest for justice" over half of my people were slaughtered by angry benders and non benders. That man deserves to die for what he put my family and my people through! I haven't forgotten what he did to my brothers and cousins.... the screams... I still hear them crying out for justice.. Ammon will pay for what he did to us... labeling us as "forsaken" was the ultimate slap in the face to our honor and dignity.," Odyn said angered but eventually calming down.

Korra was speechless, she had no idea Odyn and his family went through such a horrifying experience. Her heart went out to this young man for what he and his people went through. From what she could tell from his story, Odyn had a deep grudge against Ammon, no grudge wasn't the word for it... more like a very deep seated hatred for the terrorist and his followers. And here Odyn was revealing some of his deepest secrets to someone he hardly knew, just to let her know that it was okay to feel scared sometimes. Perhaps it was just the moment getting the best of her, or maybe it was something more than that, however for the first time Korra saw the deep scars that littered his face and both of his ears. Needless to say, the sight absolutely horrified her.

He looked towards the girl.

"Does the sight of my face disgust you, Avatar?," He asked.

Korra shook her head.

"No.. it doesn't. Those scars... are they-?," Korra replied before Odyn finished her thought.

Odyn nodded.

"From when I was in captivity by the equalists a few years ago.," He answered.

Korra looked at him surprised.

"They captured you?! How? You're so powerful! There's no way..," Korra asked surprised.

Odyn chuckled.

"Believe it or not, I fell right into a trap they set for me specifically. That's where these scars came from. Fortunately, my siblings and parents were able to rout the group of equalist sympathizers before my bending could be taken from me.," Odyn explained.

"Rout?," Korra asked.

Odyn nodded.

"Yeah.. See my people and the Equalists.. we don't like each other.. at all. We've secretly been at war with each other for the better part of a decade. Neither side has gone all out though. It's just been limited to minor skirmishes here and there so far, but.. I've got a weird feeling that Ammon is up to something and... it's not good for anyone.," Odyn told her.

Korra put her hand on his shoulder and rested her head on his back.

"I'm... sorry you had to go through that, Odyn. How you and your people have been treated is... wrong.," Korra said upset.

Odyn then chuckled.

"Well, why don't you work on fixing that? It is your job as the Avatar to bring balance, right?," Odyn suggested.

Korra sighed and nodded.

"Yeah... I suppose you're right about that.," Korra replied.

"Well... I should get going now. I think my sister is expecting me to train with her again so..," Odyn said as he got up to walk away.

He felt a tug on his shirt as it was revealed to be Korra grabbing the corner of his shirt. Shadows were seen under her bangs as she spoke up with her voice trembling slightly.

"Not yet...," Korra said.

Odyn raised an eyebrow as Korra continued.

"Can... you stay just a little longer?," Korra asked.

Odyn sighed and nodded.

"Alright, Korra. I'll stay as long as you need me to.," Odyn said.

Korra hugged him and nodded before whispering into his ear.

"Thank you, Odyn..," Korra said thanking him.

The two stayed like that for awhile, at least until Korra calmed down. She was scared, but she felt like she couldn't be that vulnerable as the Avatar. But maybe with Odyn around, she could still be herself while maintaining her persona as the strong and fearless Avatar Korra.

Time Skip: Later that evening...

Odyn was seen to be standing off to the side, nearby to Korra while she sat and thought about what he and Tenzin had conveyed to her earlier in the day. Ikki and Jinora were seen to be perhaps playing a card game at a table with Roy and Sarai off to the side. The same messenger from earlier then approached her.

"Avatar Korra, I have something for you.," The messenger said.

Korra got up angered and earth bended a small circle to trip up the messenger before she kicked him to the ground.

"It doesn't matter how many gifts Tarlock sends, I'm not joining his task force!," Korra said angered.

The delivery man held up a card in his hand as he spoke.

"It's not a gift. It's an invitation.," The man said.

"To what?," Korra said as she swiped the card from the messenger.

"Tarlock is throwing a Gala in your honor, all of Republic City's movers and shakers will be there. The councilman humbly requests your presence, Avatar.," The messenger replied.

Korra stared at the card in thought before looking toward Odyn, Roy, Sarai.

The elven siblings all nodded towards her.

"Alright Tarlock, I'll go. It would be rude not to accept his invitation.," Korra thought.

Small Time skip later...

The scene then changes to the front of a building in downtown republic city that's lit up with banners bearing the image of Korra decorating the entrance. Tenzin walks behind her with the trio of Elven siblings bringing up the rear. Korra is seen to be wearing a beautiful blue dress with her hair tied up in a bun behind her. Citizens are seen to be clapping upon noticing the Avatar enter into the building. Ikki is seen to be walking alongside Roy with Milo, Jinora, and Sarai. The citizens and nobles were curious as to who these new people were that came with the avatar. The novelty quickly wore off as they focused on Korra, the guest of honor for the evening.

Korra is seen to be enjoying herself as she looks around.

"I can't believe that all of this is for me.," Korra admitted.

Tenzin was understandably skeptical.

"I'm not entirely sure of what Tarlock's plotting , but keep your guard up. It's not like him to throw a party, just for the fun of it.," Tenzin warned her.

"Tenzin's right, Korra. Tarlock may be plotting something with all this fanfare.," Roy said.

"True... You've got my back though, right Odyn?," Korra said.

"Tch! Yeah, Yeah... Just be careful.," Odyn said.

Tarlock then came forward as the group turned to face him.

"Avatar Korra, so glad you could make it. Oh... Who are your friends here?," He said.

"Seriously? We just met the other day...," Sarai started but was cut off by Odyn.

"Sis, he's not worth it. We're Korra's extra support for tonight. I am Odyn Albanar. These are my siblings: my brother, Roy, and my sister, Sarai.," Odyn said.

"Yes, I see. Welcome then. Now right this way, Avatar. The city awaits its hero.," Tarlock said leading her away.

Sarai looked at Odyn.

"Follow her, brother.," Sarai said.

"Why?," He asked.

"Just do it. Look, there's something weird about this and I don't like the feeling I'm getting from the councilman there.," She explained.

Odyn sighed.

"I've learned not to argue with you over things like this... So, fine. You guys owe me one later though.," Odyn replied as he followed Tarlock and Korra.

Sarai and Roy smirked.

"He says that, but I guarantee you that he's just as worried about her as we are... if not more.," Sarai said.

"You.. may be onto something there, sis.," Roy said.

Tenzin looked and his face went blue over what he saw his 10 year old son, Milo doing.

"Milo, that's not a toilet! Oh dear...," Tenzin said as he had to rush over to undoubtedly clear up a mess his son was causing.

The two finally stopped and Korra noticed that Odyn had caught up with them.

"Korra, it is my privilege to introduce to you Republic City's greatest Industrialist, Hiroshi Sato.," Tarlock introduced.

Korra nodded as she spoke.

"Nice to meet you sir.," Korra said.

"Pleasure to meet you as well. We're all expecting great things of you, Avatar.," Hiroshi said.

He continued as he noticed Odyn next to her.

"I do apologize if this comes across as rude, but who's your friend here?," Hiroshi asked.

Korra looked at Odyn and smiled before bringing the elf closer to herself.

"His name is Odyn and he's the man that saved my life. I may have been captured by the Equalists if it weren't for him and his sister. They've become good friends of mine and people I can trust.," Korra replied.

Odyn nodded and shook hands with Hiroshi. For a moment it seemed like Hiroshi may have recognized Odyn from somewhere, but he shook his head, dismmissing it as an impossibility.

"Greatness... right..," Korra said.

Another familiar voice then spoke up.

"Hey Korra.," Mako greeted.

He was walking with Asami, who had her arm draped around his. But next to them was Khanna, who immediately recognized Odyn.

"This is my daughter, Asami. And here, is miss Khanna, a mutual friend of ours.," Hiroshi said introducing two of the trio who just walked up.

"It's lovely to finally meet you. Mako's told me so much about you.," Asami said.

Korra crossed her arms and seemed to be pouting slightly.

"Really? Cause he's said nothing about you. How'd you two meet anyways?," Korra asked.

Khanna stepped forward.

"Pardon me, but can I say something, Asami, Hiroshi?," Khanna asked.

Hiroshi and Asami both nodded.

She was about to say something but Odyn beat her to it.

"Khanna?," He asked.

"Odyn? huh... It is you, right?," She asked with a few tears in her eyes.

Odyn nodded. He walked forward and let Khanna embrace him.

"I knew it... I finally .. found you... cousin..," She said between silent sniffles.

Odyn patted her back.

"Yeah.. It's me. Sorry that I was silent for all these years. Things have been... rough, up until recently.," He said.

She smirked.

"I can see that.," She replied.

Korra spoke up.

"Excuse me, but how do you two know each other?," Korra asked.

Both turned and faced the group.

"Korra, this... is my cousin, Khanna.," He said.

They were surprised.

"What the-.. your cousin?!," Korra asked surprised.

Odyn nodded while Asami and Mako looked on happily at Khanna. She had found a member of her family after all this time.

Bolin came zooming in to explain how Mako and Asami met.

"Asami ran into him on her bike.," Bolin said before zooming out of the scene.

"Are you okay?," Korra asked in concern.

"I'm fine. More than fine actually. Mister Sato agreed to sponsor our team, we're back in the tournament!," Mako told Korra happily.

"Isn't that great?!," Bolin said coming back into the scene.

Korra looked away briefly.

"Yeah.. terrific.,"Korra said unenthusiatically.

Lin Bei Fong was seen to be walking when Tarlock called her over.

"Chief Bei Fong, I believe you and Avatar Korra have already met?" Tarlock asked.

"Just because the city's throwing this to do, don't think you're something special. You've done absolutely nothing to deserve this.," Lin said.

"At least she's trying to fix things... unlike some people.," Odyn said glaring at Lin.

Lin noticed him and tried glaring back.

"What was that, brat?," Lin asked angered.

"Don't get me started. Your police have done even less than Korra to curb discrimination in the city. Us "Forsaken" can attest to that.," Odyn said as his power started to swell causing his eyes to brighten.

That's when she recognized what Odyn and Khanna were, she simply walked away rather than continue the argument.

Korra stared after her and back to Odyn.

"Odyn, don't let what she-," Korra started before he interrupted her.

"No, it's alright Korra. I.. no, we're used to that being how our people are viewed... by the public. We've accepted being vilified for something we had no control over.," Odyn explained.

"That.. still doesn't make it right though.," Korra said upset.

Odyn put his hand on her shoulder and smiled at Korra.

"Thanks. But, it's alright Korra. You're the first person to truly be angry on our behalf, that means alot.," Odyn told her. "Now, go and do what you need to do."

Korra nodded and followed Tarlock.

Small Time skip...

Odyn followed at a distance as Tarlock led the Avatar down a flight of stairs, and... not so subtly right in front of reporters and media jourlists. The dark elf looked on and scowled as he recognized what was happening.

"I don't like where this is going.. What is that weasel Tarlock planning now?" , Odyn thought to himself.

"Now Korra, these folks just have a few questions for you if you have a moment to spare.," Tarlock said grinning subtly.

"Uh.. sure. I guess it wouldn't hurt anything.," Korra said while subtly looking towards Odyn for direction.

The Dark elf nodded towards her, giving her the go ahead. After all, he'd like to see just what the councilman was playing at.

"Avatar Korra, what type of danger do you think Ammon presents to Republic City and its citizens?" A reporter asked.

"I think he presents a very real threat. One that needs to be dealt with and carefully.," Korra answered to which cameras flashed and murmuring was heard.

"Then why have you refused to join the councilman's Task Force? As the Avatar, shouldn't you be going after Amon?"

"I'm just focused on my Avatar training for the moment, after all it's what I came here for." Korra answered.

"Is your avatar training more important then your duty to the people?"

"No, that's not what I'm saying at all!," Korra said back.

"Why are you backing away from this fight then?"

"Backing away? As if! I've never backed away from anything in my life!" She answered.

"You promised to serve the city, are you going back on that promise now?"

"No, of course not! I intend to honor my commitment to this city.," Korra answered again.

Sarai and Roy were going to go intervene, but Odyn held them back. This of course, confused Sarai as she looked to her older brother questionably. Odyn nodded towards Sarai, Roy, and Even Khanna as he explained the reasoning for his actions just now.

"Brother?," Sarai asked confused.

"Just wait, Sarai...," Odyn said.

Khanna raised a questioning eyebrow before she asked her cousin about his reasoning. Inwardly, she knew what he was doing. She merely wanted to confirm that her suspicions were true.

"Are you-?," Khanna started before Odyn nodded and finished his cousin's thought.

"Yes. Even though, I know how this will turn out. I'd still like to see how exactly our Avatar handles this situation and it's potential consequences.," Odyn answered.

Khanna smirked and elbowed her cousin lightly with a knowing look.

"You say that, but I bet you'll still be there by her side to guide her, won't you? Korra doesn't know what she's really getting into, but you do. You've seen it.," Khanna said with a wry smile.

Odyn looked away as he suddenly found the ceiling to be very interesting.

"Uh huh.. You can't hide anything from, cousin. You should know this by now. But don't worry, I won't tell anyone about your fascination with Korra.," Khanna said.

She then shoved him on the back, pushing him towards where Korra was at.

"Go on then, she needs you.," Khanna said with a sly smile.

Odyn had a slightly annoyed look before sighing and chuckling lightly.

"Remind me to pay you back for this later on, Khanna..," Odyn said as he made his way towards Korra.

Khanna chuckled.

"Sure, if you even get the chance to.," Khanna replied chuckling.

As Odyn made his way over to where Korra was being interrogated by media reporters and journalists, Khanna couldn't help but to inwardly smile and root for Korra and Odyn to come to a unified understanding of one another. She believed both of them could not only help each other, but were necessary to each other's well being. Korra was necessary to Odyn to restore his trust in society that had shattered by a select few corrupt individuals, just as Odyn was necessary to Korra as a teacher, friend, someone with a unique perspective on things relating to the outside world, but more importantly... as strong male presence in her life that had just been lacking since she left home. Sure Tenzin was there, and she had Mako and Bolin as friends around her age, but she needed someone to really push her to become the best Avatar that she could possibly be. Khanna saw things in both Odyn and Korra that were eerily similar, almost mirror images of each other. If her vision about the future was to come true, Those two would be getting alot closer to each other over the coming weeks and months.

"Do you think pro bending is more important than fighting the revolution, Avatar Korra?"

"How do you think Avatar Aang would've handled this situation?"

Korra is very clearly getting annoyed and frustrated at the endless bombardment of questions from the reporters. The camera then cuts to a closeup of Korra's face as her eyebrow twitches and thebangs of her hair shadow her face.

"Are you afraid of Amon?"

"I'm not afraid of anybody! If the city needs me then.... (she gestures to Tarrlok) I'll join Tarrlok's Task Force and help to fight Amon!" Korra yelled.

Tarrlok, not so subtly rushed up and put his hand on Korra's shoulder, earning him glares from the dark elves and Tenzin.

"There's your headline, folks!," Tarrlok emphatically proclaims.

As cameras start flashing, Tenzin looks down in disappointment and being powerless. Bolin and Mako look at each other, confused. The other guests in the scene also look confused except Asami, who is still smiling and looking forward while holding Mako's arm. Tarrlok smiles mischievously as Korra looks down with a sad expression when she realizes that she has been tricked. Odyn walks past the councilman as he glares daggers at him before putting his hand roughly on the councilman's shoulder before whispering into his ear.

"You may have tricked everyone else you little weasel, but! (squeezes Tarrlok's shoulder to the point where it felt as if he'd break it) Do'nt think for a moment you've fooled me. I know what your real goal is. You had best watch yourself when i'm around, snake!," Odyn said before letting go and going to attend to Korra. Tarrlok looked back at the young dark elf as he rubbed his shoulder.

"I'd better be careful around that one... That young man is very dangerous..," Tarrlok thought to himself.

Scene changes to show the outside of the City Hall. Shifts to Korra, who is twiddling her thumbs and looking sad.

Before she leaves, Odyn walks up and gestures off to the side.

"Korra.," Odyn said addressing her.

She looked up with a small smile at the dark elf.

"Odyn, hey.," She said distraught.

"You have a moment to talk?," Odyn asked.

Korra nodded.

"sure." She said.

They walk just off to the side as they begin their chat.

"Try not to dwell on what happened too much. What's done is done. You can only go forward from here.," Odyn said.

"Easy for you to say. You're not the one who fell hook, line, and sinker into Tarrlok's obvious trap.... I am the worst.," Korra said.

"Trust me, Korra I've made my fair share of mistakes... ones I can't ever take back now. (Korra looked at him curiously when he said that) But, that's a talk for another time. It was my mistake not stopping what happened in there... I.. wanted to see how you'd handle the situation. But regardless, I'm here right beside you. I'll support you, Korra in what you do from now on. If you feel like you need someone to have your back, i'll be there as fast as you can blink. This whole thing is just as much my fault for not stopping you as it is your fault for falling for Tarrlok's trap. We both share the blame.," Odyn said.

Korra looked towards the young dark elf.

"Odyn, none of this is your fault. But, thank you. Th.. that means alot coming from you.," Korra said smiling.

"Of course, Korra. You're the one human aside from Tenzin, his family, and your three friends that I can actually trust right now.," Odyn said.

Korra's eyes softened and she smiled at Odyn as she put her hand on top of his.

"Well, it's more than when we first met. It's a start at least, right Odyn?," Korra replied.

Odyn chuckled.

"Right you are, Avatar.," Odyn said as the two fist bumped.

Odyn got up and began to walk away.

"i'd better get going now. I'll be nearby if you need me.," Odyn said before he felt a tug on his shirt.

"I know this is selfish, but... couldn't you stay just a little longer?," Korra asked.

Odyn sighed.

"Alright, fine. But, only because YOU asked me to, Korra.," Odyn replied.

Tarrlok arrived and saw Odyn to which he was going to say something, before Korra cut him off.

"He stays, or consider your task force down one Avatar. Your choice.," Korra said with a glare.

Tarrlok just responded by walking away and addressing his task force. If this is what it took to keep Korra on his Task Force, so be it. He began his speech.

"My fellow task force deputies, tonight we will execute a raid on an underground chi-blocker training camp located in the Dragon Flats borough. According to my sources, there is a cellar underneath this bookstore, where Equalists train chi-blocking in secret.," Tarrlok said as he pointed to blueprints of a bookstore.

Camera fades from the blueprints to a view of the bookstore from above while a large car with a water tank and filled with task force members in a kneeling position drives toward its location. Once stopped, the task force members jump out and up against the wall. Korra peers through an opening at the bottom of the wall and sees several men and woman training and learning chi-blocking techniques. On the opposite wall lays a large poster with a portrait of Amon staring over the room. Korra has a flashback to her dream at the beginning of the episode where Amon is reaching toward her. Korra gasps with fear, but is then reminded that she's not alone as Odyn puts his hand upon her shoulder to comfort her. This gave her a little bit more courage as she puts a resolved look on her face. She stands up and looks at Tarrlok for the signal. Tarrlok nods and raises his hand to show his fingers outstretched. He closes them into a fist, shows his outstretched palm again, closes his hand into a fist again, and flashes two fingers this time. A task force member unwinds the top of the water tank and bends the water out. Another member bends the water toward him and to another task force member and another until all the waterbenders have water at their disposal. Two members of the task force are shown with water ready for the signal to attack. The camera flashes to Tarrlok holding his hand out behind him, where a waterbender is holding the water waiting for a signal.

Korra breathes in and out and the scene changes to inside the room of chi-blocker trainers and trainees. Odyn just reminds her to calm down and try to stay calm. The dark elf gets into postion to strike as he positions himself in front of her so Korra can follow his lead.

He looked back towards her, while speaking silently to not alert their targets.

"If we're doing this, there's such a thing as subterfuge, Avatar. Be careful that you aren't spotted until after the moment you strike.," Odyn sagely advised the girl.

Korra nodded towards the dark teen and offered a small smile towards him, it was reassuring to have Odyn here to watch her back. She may not have been able to openly admit that to him yet, but it was genuinely how she felt. Korra was seen breathing in and out as she prepared to spring into action.

After a moment of hesitation, the raid on the equalist hideout, began. Water is seen flooding the room as it then quickly freezes, surprising the people inside of the room. The task force earthbenders break through the wall, causing several would be chi blockers to leap back. A trio of earthbenders with the task force attack the chi blockers and trainees by throwing bricks towards them.

Another task force earthbender pushed up a block of earth and uses it to slam a person into a wall. Korra leaps into action, followed closely by Odyn and Tarrlok entering the room. The elder waterbender tossed someone into a wall, using his waterbending and freezes their head to the same wall.

A chi blocker throws a grenade that has green gas coming out of it, while the other opens the door to escape. Korra freezes the grenades with her waterbending in ice, successfully stopping the leaking gas.

"I'm going after those two.," Korra said.

"Not alone you're not.," Odyn said.

Korra smirked and then replied.

"Suit yourself.," Korra said as Odyn followed her.

Korra kicks open the door the two chi blockers left through and speeds down the corridor, Odyn following beside her. She trips over a wire and tumbles to the ground, Odyn quickly racing over to help her up.

A chi blocker leapt out from a space in the ceiling, trying to grab Korra but was quickly knocked over by a fist of light punching him in the stomach. The chi blocker skids to a stop as Korra takes on the other chi blocker coming at her while swing a bola. Korra adjusts and blasted a stream of water at the chi blocker, freezing him to a wall.

"Nice timing. Thanks, Odyn.", Korra said.

"No problem, Avatar. I am here to help you after all.," Odyn replied.

Tarrlok, finally caught up with the two teens and spotted a third chi blocker sneaking up behind them. Just as he leapt to get the jump on the two, Tarrlok bent a stream of water at the chi blocker, forcing him into a wall and freezing him there.

"Thanks for the assist, Tarrlok.," Korra said.

"The three of us make a great team, Avatar.," Tarrlok said.

"Yeah, we do." Korra said crossing her arms and giving him a demeaning look.

The scene then switches to a group of reporters, flashing cameras, and the people who participated in the task force standing over several captured chi blockers. After another flash from a camera, Tarrlok is seen ushering a chi blocker into the back of a police truck with several task force members on the side. Another flash reveals a row of task force members with Korra at the front having an annoyed look on her face.

Tarrlok is answering a question through a microphone while Odyn is seen eyeballing the whole scene with a look of disapproval. The picture turns black and white and is zoomed out to show the same picture in the newspaper. Toza, the owner of the gym is seen to be sweeping while Bolin makes two plates of earth hover over his hands using earthbending. Mako is seen to be reading the newspaper.

"So.. guess this means no Korra for practice again?," Bolin asked.

Mako sighed in annoyance.

"Doesn't look like it.," Mako said with a sigh.

Bolin then slumps over in annoyance at this news.

The scene then transitions to news conference with Tarrlok answering questions as camera are flashing. Odyn is beside Korra as she stood off to the side momentarily.

"Avatar Korra has bravely answered the call. With the the two of us defending Rebublic City in the name of justice, we have nothing to fear from Ammon and the Equalists." Tarrlok answered.

A reporter then raised their hand.

"Question for the Avatar. Ammon still hasn't been located, why have you failed to locate him?," The reporter asked.

Korra then stepped up to the podium to answer the question.

"You wanna know why? Because Ammon is hiding in the shadows like a coward! Ammon, I challenge you to a duel! No task force, no chi blockers.. just the two of us tonight at midnight on Avatar Aang Memorial Island. Let's cut to the chase and settle this thing, if your man enough to face me!," Korra said.

Korra then walks off from the podium, illiciting a chorus of questions from the reporters. Odyn silently shook his head as he knew how this would turn out.

"May as well go after that idiot...," He thought to himself as he followed the avatar.

The scene then transitions again to a park where a vehicle is seen to be driving with two passengers inside. Those two passengers were of course Mako and Asami.

"I know it sounds kinda weird to say this but.. I'm glad I hit you with my moped.," Asami said turning towards him.

Khannawho sat beside the two of them, simply stared out of the window while the two talked.

"Ha.. yeah, me too.," Mako replied as he gave her a smile.

Asami was seen to be pointing at Mako's scarf as she spoke again.

"I forgot to ask, why aren't you wearing the new silver scarf I got for you last week? Did you not like it?," Asami asked.

Mako looked towards the woman again, putting his hand on top of hers.

"No, that's not it at all. It was a really nice scarf, but.. this scarf was my father's and.. it's all I have left of him. I just feel like it keeps me safe.," Mako replied.

Khanna continued looking out of the window, wondering why she was here.

"Why am I here again? It's obvious the two like each other, feel like I'm just a third wheel here...," Khanna thought to herself.

"I'm so sorry. I lost my mother when I was very young..," Asami said in response.

The two stare at each other for a moment before Asami leans into Mako's arms.

"I feel so safe with you.," Asami said.

Mako then looks towards Khanna.

"Something wrong, Khanna?," He asked.

"Hmm? Good question, Mako. I'm not.. quite sure just yet.," Khanna said. "I'll be sure to keep you and your girlfriend in the loop though."

The scene then transitions again to at night as an air glider is seen descending upon a dock. Korra is on a small boat by herself unraveling the rope that is tied to the dock.

"Korra this is madness!," Tenzin said in warning.

She looked up to him.

"Don't try to stop me! I have to face Ammon alone.," She replied back.

Tenzin angrily turned towards Tarrlok.

"This is all your doing!," Tenzin said angered.

"I tried to talk her out of it too, but she's made up her mind.," Tarrlok said.

Korra then left the docks, using her waterbending to propel the boat towards the statue of Avatar Aang. Odyn then walked up next to them.

"Tenzin, you needn't worry. I'll follow her. I'll be looking out for that idiot..," Odyn said as he silently took off into the air after her.

"We'll be watching the island closely. If anything happens, I have a fleet of police ships ready to swoop down and get her at a moment's notice.," Tarrlok said.

Another pair of voices then sounded off next to them, amidst the fog.

"There's no need for that. Our brother is more than powerful enough on his own, Korra will be fine with him watching her back.," the voice said.

Tenzin turned and saw that it was revealed to be Sarai and Roy standing next to them.

"I do hope you're right.. for all of our sakes.," Tenzin said.

The scene then transitions towards the island with Korra.

With Korra...

She stands at the ready for Ammon when she thinks she hears something. Unfortunately, it turns out to be nothing making her sigh in relief. That was only momentary as she is then spooked by the clock on the island ringing at the stroke of midnight. She then is seen to be waiting for Ammon to show up, only to end up waiting for a long while.

She then stretches, yawns, and stands to her feet after a long period of waiting.

"Guess you're a no show Ammon. Who's scared now?," Korra said as she stands to her feet.

As she begins walking, not paying attention a snare is seen twirling towards her feet. She is then caught off guard as it ensnares her feet, dragging her inside the temple on the island. She firebended her way to her feet as she is surrounded by equalists. Ropes bind her limbs as she tries firebending her way out of it only to get knocked out by chi blockers.

The screen comes back up as she is held by the equalists as Ammon approaches her.

"I received your invitation, Avatar. Our showdown, while inevitable is a bit premature. Although it would be the simplest thing for me to take away your bending right now, i won't. You'd only become a Maryr. Benders of every nation would rally behind your untimely demise, but I assure you I have a plan. And I'm saving you for last. Then and only then will you get your duel. And i will destroy you.," Ammon said.

He went to knock her out, only for several of his men to go flying into the space before him.

"What?!," he said.

The men gathered up, but were sent flying in bunches by a tremendous force. They parted, leaving the way for an angry Odyn.

"You..," Odyn said with his power blazing around him.

Korra turned around, shocked by the appearance of Odyn.

"Ah.. It seems I've underestimated the strength of your guard dog.. until next time, Avatar!," Ammon said as one of his men threw down a smoke bomb.

A moment later, Ammon and his men were gone. Odyn rushed over untied her, moving quickly to restore movement to her limbs.

"O.. dyn? What are you doing here?," Korra asked.

"Looking after you, idiot. Didn't you know that was a trap?," he asked.

Korra looked down, making Odyn ease up.

"Not important.  Are you alright? Did that man do anything to you? Did he... take your bending away?," Odyn asked.

Korra opened up her palm and sure enough, there was fire in it. She quickly closed her fist.

"No, I'm fine. He ambushed me though.," Korra began before tears streamed down her face.

She instantly hugged him as she began to cry.

"I.. felt so scared... and terrified! I felt.. so helpless!," Korra continued as she sobbed into his clothes.

"It's alright, Korra. I'm just glad you're alright. Your nightmare is over now. I'll be right here with you.," Odyn told her.

"Th..Thanks O-Odyn... Tenzin was right though.. I've been so scared this whole time.. I've never felt like this before and... i don't know what I should do..," She said as she fell back into his arms to cry.

Odyn hugged her once again, rubbing her back to soothe her.

"Admitting your fears is the first step, Korra. Even I have to do the same at times. This is just a necessary step in overcoming fear.," Odyn told her sagely.

She looked at him in the eyes.

"Even you, Odyn? But.. you're so strong! How are you scared of something?," she asked.

Odyn chuckled and stroked her hair.

"Trust me, even the strongest of warriors feel fear. No one is immune to it, it's something we all face whether we're strong or weak. It is something that we all must overcome to grow stronger.," Odyn told her.

Korra stood to her feet as she wiped away the tears, she still clung to Odyn for comfort. Though it was against his better nature to grow attached to anyone outside of his family, Korra was cracking that exterior little by little.

"Can we stay like this, a little longer?," Korra asked him.

Odyn chuckled.

"If it makes you feel better, I'll stay for as long as you need me to Avatar.," Odyn told her.

Korra nodded.

"Thank you.. Odyn.," She said with her face still buried in his clothes.

They stayed like that for a little while longer until Korra felt better.

The dark teen looked towards her.

"Feeling better now, Korra?," Odyn asked.

Korra nodded.

"Yeah.. thanks.," Korra said slightly blushing in embarrassment.

"Come on, we better head back before Tenzin and the others start worrying about us.," Odyn said.

"Right!," Korra said following him.

The two then walked out and made their way back towards Air Temple Island. Though they didn't know it at the time, that was just the beginning of what would later become a very special bond between Avatar Korra and the mysterious Odyn.

End Chapter...

Ending theme:

Haruka Kanata (Bleach)

Visuals: main cast- Korra, Odyn, Mako, Khanna, Bolin, Sarai, Roy images of them fighting off the equalists before odyn is seen reaching a hand out to Korra. Hesitantly she grabs it as the group turns to face Ammon.

Hey guys hopefully you enjoyed the chapter! I know it followed the original episode alot, but this was moreso to set up the bonding for Odyn and Korra. True Korra was a bit ooc in this chapter, but it is necessary for later on in the story. Also i figure it'd be better to have Mako and Asami have their little fling first before I set up who Mako will ultimately end up with, though I've done a little foreshadowing of that already.

If you're wondering who Asami will be with... i haven't decided that yet, but i do have someone in mind.

Beside the main pairing which two characters would you like to see end up together?

A. Bolin x Sarai

B. Mako x Khanna

C. Roy x Ikki

I'll have more pairings later. For now those are the ones I could immediately think of. Anyways, that's all for now. See ya in the next one!

Chapter 3: The Spirit of Competition & Romance?
