Chapter-12: Job

After a few hours, bhram was thoroughly examined for any abnormalities afterward he was escorted to a general meeting hall.

As bhram was walking through the corridor he noticed that the gravity was very similar to his home planet, it felt very abnormal to him. He had come across a similar situation in the spaceship, when he had enquired he was told that gravity can be adjusted if one had a power core.

Bhram was shocked when he found out that a city had a power core similar to a Warship (spaceship), now he felt even more puzzled at the importance and cost of owning a power core.

While he was looking around he saw many odd sculptures and books along the way, he even came across a painting on the sealing that represented a moving star system.

"Why, Why.. why did you allow her to enter a rank 3 danger zone? Now, how am I going to explain this to her parents….. Ah!!"

Bhram stopped exploring and looked toward the room, the emotion in that outraged voice, he had felt it when his father had passed away.

"Phil, I'm really sorry. I was not able to stop her furthermore there was no concrete proof of any danger, if I would have known this outcome I would have forced her to stay…. But I couldn't LLL " he heard a person sobbing along with Phil.

Bhram didn't approach the room, he just stood outside and just looked around for a couple of hours.

"Bhram, you can come in now"

Bhram heard it and entered the room after a few minutes.

"Bhram, this is Lady Jiny. She is an old friend of mine and is now the guardian of this 'Fallen Kings Library'"

'Fallen King' thought Bhram and looked at the hunch-backed old lady.

"Please make your quittance, Lady Jinny," Bhram said with a polite bow.

"Not bad, young man. I have to say, you are one lucky bastard to have survived planet-scale destruction and to come across a friendly warship in the vast space. It's just amazing, I can say that the Heavens may have planned something big for you" said the old lady while looking at his lab reports.

"Phil, just told me that his captain has assigned him to take care of a refugee-like you. You may not know this, but that crafty crock is a cunning, cold-blooded bastard. But he made an effort to allow an S-Rank transcendent to escort you, I must say you may be something special or that bastard is getting old" the old kept on badmouthing Jules.

"I can say, you are very lucky and not special from a cultivator's perspective. You are just a Rank-E mortal according to these reports, but I believe in old sayings of the heaven"

'Heaven, people in such an advanced civilization still believe in heaven?' Bhram thought.

"Oh.. yes, Lady Jiny. She is a cartographer of stars, she believes in an old philosophy of heaven's way" Phillip said as he looked at the Old lady as if asking if the cause of granddaughters' death is also a part of Heaven's way.

"Hm.. what do you know? Our ancestors were able to walk out of their homeworlds by following the directions created by heaven… Che.. forget about it, I won't waste my time trying to explain these things. Boy, since fate has bought you to me I shall grant you a post as a books keeper on the ground floor. I could have assigned you a higher floor but unfortunately, you don't have a power matrix, so I can only make you a bookkeeper of the ground floor"

The old lay looked at Bhram, expecting him to be excited or show an overjoyed face. But when she recovered that he was from a backwater planet, she realized that he had no clue about the significance of being a bookkeeper.

"Bhram, thank the Lady for her generous offer. Being a bookkeeper for a mortal of your rank can be considered the highest of honor, usually, the scientists from the 'Science Department' have to pay a huge amount of contribution points just to enter the library for 2 Days and 10% higher for reading a single book and 50% higher as the floors increase, but as a bookkeeper of the ground floor. You get access to all the books on the ground floor and even accommodation in the Library"

"Well, the ground floor is only general information and some history recorded by historians'. Those scientists always hogged all the resources provided by the Level-3 Human civilizations and have not made any noticeable contribution to the human race for the past 20000 years. This is one of the ways the Human civilizations and Imperial court is controlling those leaches"

"Thank you, Lady Jinny, for your offer. I'm very grateful for your offer, I don't know I can repay you for your kindness." Bhram said as he made a 90° bow to show his utmost appreciation.

"Well, first off I can only pay you 20 Silver coins per month, and don't get me wrong but you are severely underqualified to be a bookkeeper. I can increase your pay after seeing your performance, you see this library is the property of the imperial court and in the jurisdiction of the Human civilization. If any book is damaged or stolen, the bookkeeper will have his head chopped off and soul prisoned in a puppets"

When bhram heard her first statement about the pay, he was confused as he felt that 20 Silver was fair to pay for just looking after books. But when he heard the significance and impact of a bookkeeper, he seriously felt even if they offer them 1 Gold it would still be less.

At his home, a king's wealth was proportional to the country he ruled, and so were the dangers he had to face for being a king. Thus the citizens were also in agreement with a king being wealthier than his people, as he had to face a higher risk.

"You might have seen all the statues in the library, they are people who either tried to steal the books or the bookkeeper who failed to stop the thief. We guardians of the library also face a similar consequence if we were to allow major damage to this library, you see the monkey statue outside was the previous guardian. He had failed his duties in stopping a thief from stealing a Level-5 cultivation manual" said the old lady as she pointed out at the statues inside the meeting room.

"But, you don't have to worry about it. I highly doubt if any idiot will ever try to steal from the ground floor"

'Then, how the fuck is there so many statues in this library. I have come across more than a few dozen statues only in this corridor, also how the fuck are the people sane enough to steal from this library'

"Well, I know what you're thinking. I had a similar thought when I first heard of theft, you see knowledge is power and this library is a treasure trove to all those who seek knowledge on how to cultivate how to increase a civilization's level to a higher realm. Even, I as the guardian am not allowed to enter or read or share specific information with anyone"

Bhram felt that he was getting himself into muddy water.

"Bhram, You don't have to worry. After a few incidents, the library was moved into a different dimension and it's almost impossible to break into, also I cannot offer or search for a better job or security as a Bookkeeper. I suggest you think this through and come to a decision after a full day. I have a few things to do so I will leave after a few days, so if you decide not to take up this post I can get you a job in a nearby restaurant and that's the best I can offer for a mortal of your rank in this planet" Phillip gave his ultimatum.
