True Name: Godfrey of Bouillon
Introduction: Godfrey of Bouillon was the second son of Count Eustace II of Boulogne and the legitimate heir of the House of Bouillon. In 1096, Godfrey, along with his brother Baldwin, led the Western German Crusaders during the First Crusade to the Holy Land of Jerusalem. In 1097, Godfrey achieved victory over the Sultanate of Rum at Dorylaeum, while Baldwin of Boulogne occupied the city of Edessa and its surrounding areas. On June 3rd of the following year, they successfully captured Antioch in Syria, and on July 15th of the same year, they seized Jerusalem, establishing the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Godfrey remained in Jerusalem to govern and rule over the city and its surrounding regions. When the Crusader leader Raymond of Toulouse declined the role of King of Jerusalem, Godfrey assumed the throne but did not take the title of king. Instead, he chose a self-proclaimed title within the Holy City and called himself the Guardian of the Holy Sepulchre.
