Rebirth

"Listen for the voice of God then follow it and know that in time you will find your salvation.", spoke our teacher.

The girls sitting beside me were chatting with their apathetic nature.

Out of the blue, the teacher choose Yagami to explain the meaning of that sentence. Why must it be him?! Out of all the people around us, why is he the only one in the limelight?! I envy the people who have such abilities. He himself has no concern nor admiration of the power he holds. What an abominable peer to have.

Yagami spoke, " Follow the teachings of God and receive his blessings and so it shall be that the seas will again become bountiful and the raging storms will subside."

Abominable indeed. Knowledgeable yet so distasteful. We had been in the same classroom ever since the inception, when we were young children. I never had a friend by my side even then. Not because I was introverted, but because I never needed one. I was bored. Bored of the world I had seen. Joy was always so unreasonable. Unnecessary.

I was just as abominable as Light. I too, felt that life was too simple. Too easy. Yet, I never exploited it. I never needed to. I lived my life on requirements. Everything I did was barely passable. Just enough to make it to the horizon. Just enough to make it to another day.

I spent the rest of the class staring at the faces of the teachers that taught. I presented the act of paying attention.

I walked home. I switched on the television. The first thing that played was the news. Just great.

I surfed through the different channels yet nothing was working except for the news.

'Today, at approximately 11 am a 32-year-old man was found stabbed to death in his apartment in the city of Yokohama Karigara Prefecture. Karigawa police are treating this case as a homicide. In other news, today, suspected murderer Naoki Tokuji was arrested in the district of Shibuya Tokyo. He is being held in custody facing murder charges for the brutal slaying of his common-law partner, who was only 25 at the time of death.'

More murders. Great. I couldn't care less. Life didn't have any meaning to begin with. Some people strive for recognition but I just don't see the reason why. In the end, they lose everything as the days go by. On the other hand, the people living everyday in moderation, with nothing to fear, are the ones who truly enjoy life. All I wanted to be was another one of those men, another man in the crowd. However, fate had different plans.

The next day in school passed by just like any other. As we exited the premises, I saw Light Yagami, holding a black book in his hand. He looked through the book and put it down a while later.

I picked the book up. I looked at the cover. In bold letters, the words 'Death Note' were written.

Death Note? What was this, an edgy teens diary? I flipped open to the first page. The first sentence stated, 'How to use it: the human whose name is written in this notebook.. shall die.' How amusing. Such a simple yet perplexing statement. Out of sheer amusement, I decided to take it home.

Light turned towards me, eyed the book; shrugged his head and walked away.
