I spent hours and hours to try and think of a way to measure the extent of the death note. The only answer I could derive to my problem was contradiction.
If I made someone do something that they wouldn't wish to do, would they do it? The answer would obviously be no. However, if somewhere deep within, that person somewhat wished to follow that particular task, then they would obey my orders. This of course, was something I had noticed during the death of Kisaya Tatsu.
I honestly didn't expect him to follow what was written in the death note, but since he did, it indicated that the words written death note would be followed as long as the person wishes for such an event to happen, at least, in the deepest corner of his/her mind. The only way to measure the power to control wills was to make someone do something unwillingly, beyond his/her imagination.
My targets were shrewd businessmen. I collected information about two rich businessmen who had never donated a penny to charity. They didn't do anything wrong, but it's not like I cared. In my journey to become God, if I had to kill a few innocent people along the way, I wouldn't care. Experimenting the limits of the death note was far more important for me than people who were living the entirety of their worthless lives making money. And it's not that I'm against the rich, I don't like people who waste their lives making money over everything else. To live such a baseless life... urgh.
Anyways, the names I was going to write would die after 50 days. What would I do until then? What's the point of being all-powerful when I have to be this cautious?
It was then, I found a better plan. A plan, that would enable me to write thousands of names at once.
