Health teaching - 12

Everyday, we used to greet them and we maintained good interpersonal relationship with them. We communicated about their community problems and gave them solutions which they could apply with the local resources.

One day, our teacher said that we should prepare for our health teaching to the community people. I went to my assigned homes and asked them about their main health problem or the topic that they would like to listen to. Most of them told me that they would like to learn about thyroid disorder. So, I decided that I would prepare my health teaching on it.

At first, I searched all the necessary information about the thyroid disorder and noted them. Then I prepared charts, pamphlets, leaflets and flipchart on its definition, causes, signs and symptoms, and then treatment and preventive measures.

On the day of health teaching, Suzy assisted me on pasting the charts on the wall. After arranging everything, I went to call them. They said okay but for about twenty minutes nobody came. I felt so disheartened inside but still I again went to call them. All of them said okay again but still nobody came.

About after fifteen minutes two people passing by the way came and asked me what I was doing. I told them that I was going to give health teaching on thyroid disorder. Then they asked if it was okay for them to join it. I felt relieved and asked them to take seat.

The same two people called other people walking on the way to join my teaching.

(I felt like they were angels who came to help me.)

Later about six people were present, and then I decided to start my teaching. At first, I gave introduction about myself and the topic. Then I told them my objective and performed pre test to know how much knowledge they had on this topic.

When I was asking them questions, suddenly about eight to ten people came together in group. They were the people of my assigned houses. I felt very happy to see them. They came near me and apologized for being late, they told that they were completing their house chores so they were late to attend my teaching. I felt very thankful towards them for attending and asked them to have a seat.

After that I continued my teaching. The audience asked me a lot of questions and I answered them actively. There was a good interaction between us and they participated a lot. I also distributed the leaflets and pamphlets to them.

At last I summarized the topic and asked them if there was any questions. They said that I gave lots of information and thanked me. I also thanked them for participating in my teaching. Thanks to them, my health teaching was successful.

When I reached home, I hurriedly ran to my mothers side and told her everything. She also became very happy and congratulated me. This time, I had felt very grateful that I had took nursing as my future path.
