I am Doomed

I shut my eyes pulling my hair back. It's been nine hours since I last saw Tom. He had told me that I should wait but I knew that things were not going to be simple. I was charged with drug smuggling in Russia. I don't know why I decided to marry here of all the places. They took such charges with much sensitivity. And, I already knew that I was going downhill. And, the case was going quite strong. And…I knew with my name involved everyone was going to be at extra lengths.

I tried to take in long breaths while I couldn't help but wonder where I thought I will be versus where I have landed. It was the day we two waited for.

I hear someone coming to my cell and soon an officer appeared. I had noticed him making rounds here quite often. "You are beautiful." The smile on his face crept me out and I turned my face away praying to get out of here soon. I woke up in the morning with very sore muscles. I wasn't used to sleeping on such a mattress. Even my orphanage had better facilities. One of the officers came to tell me that I had a visitor.

"Hey...where's Tom?" I saw Tania appearing and asked very nervously. I knew he was not the one who would leave me but I don't know why I asked. Something was telling me that nothing was going to stay straight.

"He…will be here."

"How everything is going?" I asked to which she lowered her eyes.

"I don't know much. I just want you fine. My dad…was saying it was going to be difficult and…"

"And?" I asked,

"A lot of guests had left for the USA already. The news and media are very quick to…you know…But I am staying with my dad. At least, for two more days. I had an aunt here to attend to too…I hope everything sorts out soon." She told me and I sighed.

"It's fine. In fact, it will be good. I really don't want to hear what they are telling about me…" I shrugged my shoulders. It wasn't hard for me to see my friends telling me she won't be around. I knew things will sort out.

"It will be worse from where I see." She whispered making me exhale. I was always so fine with things going downhill. People might think that being or raised an orphan I am supposed to feel not wanted but it was never the case with me. I always loved and was so proud of myself. I knew myself more than anyone in this world.

"You don't need to worry. I am fine. I…I know I will be through it." I pasted a smile on my face and tried my best to let her see that I am fine.

"Have you eaten?" She asked making me laugh.

"Yea,…don't worry Tania. I will come to shoot for higher." I lied for my breakfast. The food here was trash.

"Hey,…sorry I am late." I heard Tom's voice and for some unknown reason, it gave me the reason to breathe.

"It is fine…I am…am really sorry," I apologized while Tom was quick to hold my hand. "It's fine. You haven't done anything. So, you don't need to apologize."

"I will wait outside." Tania excused herself while I looked at Tom.

"They must be saying that I was exploiting my popularity to do such things. Believe me, Tom, I will never do such a thing." I whispered looking at his face that had come quite close to me. A screen between us separated us.

"I believe you." He said making me smile.

"But I am sure someone has done it to defame me," I said shaking my head in anger when he added.

"Don't worry. I believe you. And, I will do anything to get you out of here." Somewhere I believed him. He was a millionaire and owned a law firm.

"Why…why you won't doubt on me?" I asked just to hear something comforting from him but I wasn't ready for what his answer was.

"Because I know who is behind this." I don't know but his expression started to worry me.

"Who?" I asked.

"My Uncle…" My eyes got wide open. I don't know why his uncle would do such a thing. Did he not like me? Did he want to ruin our wedding?

"Why? why?...you should go and give them the evidence against your uncle. I will be out in no time." For my part, I made the whole sense.

"No, no, no, no,…you will not give them my uncle's name. Please…I will take you out without getting him prisoned…I am trying, Kate. I don't want my uncle to end up in jail. I want you out. And, then we will marry…"

"Why you want to help your uncle? He…tried to frame me. He…tried to separate us, Tom." I was horrified. I knew Tom could be very dominating but I wasn't ready to get his crap right now.

"He wasn't trying to frame you or separate us. He…he does such things to make money for a very long time. I…I have tried to get him good but some habits are difficult to get rid of…he…he only gets them in your purse because no one was going to check on you…I…I am really sorry. Please, forgive me. But…we are family now." I wanted to kill him right now but couldn't help and sob with my hand on my mouth.

"I…care about you as much as I care about my family, Kate. You are my family. And, nothing can harm you." I hear him and turned to clear my eyes. I didn't want him to see me cry. I turn to look at him before asking. "…what if I don't want to marry you after this?" I asked but he was quick to say.

"You don't have your previous reputation but still I am here not caring about the things. You know why Kate? Because you are my family. I will never leave you. And, if this reason isn't enough for you to stay then, I don't know what else you want." I was horrified at his statement. He knew I wasn't involved in this.

"I didn't know you could support something like this." The disappointment was evident in my voice.

"I am only saving my family. And, I promise you will be out." He seemed persistent.

"You are lying. It is not this easy. You know who am I? How much famous I am? They will not release me this soon."

"If they won't release you I will arrange your escape." He said making me gasp.

I was surprised how he could talk like this.

"Are you even listening to yourself? I will never do such a thing."

"Doesn't matter. I will get you out of here. And, keep you for me. Won't you like that?" I wonder if he was always like this and I didn't observe.

"No, get me out of here clean. I refuse to run away."

"Are you sure?" He asked and anger was seeping out of my every pore when I repeated.

"Yes…I will never run away."

He left without even saying bye to me. It wasn't as if I couldn't afford a lawyer for me. I…I will call Caleb or someone else. I know people too.

But little did I know I had no one or resources to contact anyone outside. I wasn't provided with a lawyer. I didn't know how to speak Russian. Even if I would say thousand times that it was Tom's uncle. No one exactly knew what I was saying. And, that creepy officer was always standing out of my cell at night sometimes jerking off.

It was after two weeks that an officer came to told me about a visitor. It was Tom. "What are you doing here?" I folded my arms and was beyond pissed.

"You know things won't work this way. I love you, Kate. I can't see you like this."

"You don't love me. You are a creep who wants me to lose my identity. And, I have earned all of this by doing so much. I will never run away." I always knew that I would rather die than lose everything I had earned with so much work.

"I don't want to do any of this. I just want you to move to the US. And, once there, we will have our connections, friends and resources to work better. It is the best option. I…I will do anything to get your image back. We…we will marry the moment you will land in the USA. They are cancelling my stay here and I have to move now…please,…for once try to recall what we used to have, Kate." Of course, he sounded sane this time. And, I too didn't want to be prosecuted in a country like this.

"What is your plan?" I asked to which he exhaled in peace before telling me about all he had planned. It didn't seem difficult. Apparently, he planned to bribe a lot of people and took services from an agency here that was specialized in this. We bid our farewell quite emotionally. I couldn't believe he was leaving tomorrow. Leaving me alone in this country where I know no one. But I had to stay strong to patiently wait for the day I was supposed to break this jail.
