Chapter 42: Actions and Consequences

I slam the door behind me, the glass walls rattling from the impact. No one says anything inside my office. Each face looks just as shocked as the next. Even Nathan, who joined us shortly after the altercation, sits down on one of the couches, looking glum.
“This isn’t good,” he says once I finish explaining what happened.
“No, it isn’t,” I agree, sitting at my desk. Kait and Marcey sit on the couch next to Nathan, and we all take a moment to reflect.
“I’m sorry,” Kait says.
Marcey looks over at her. “Why are you sorry?”
“This is my fault. My ability threatens everyone. If I didn’t have this power, none of this would be happening.”
“You don’t know that,” Marcey responds.
“That’s right,” I say. “This started long before you arrived. If people are threatened by you, let them be. It just proves that your gift is something to be desired. Never doubt yourself, Kait. Never.”
