Chapter 34: Hunting for a Killer

I stride down the hall, sweat trickling down my neck in beads, Nathan running at my heels. The morning had been quiet up until now. I was peacefully drinking my morning coffee when I received word that the Council wanted to meet.
When I enter the conference room, all Council members are seated at the rectangular table, faces turned toward me in anticipation. Azalea is the first to greet me.
“Good morning, nephew. We were wondering if you were ever going to arrive.”
“I’m here,” I say as I take my place at the head of the table. Nathan sits to my right, directly across from my aunt.
“What is it? Why ask us here on such short notice?” Nathan asks in a rush.
Azalea eyes us both. “It was I who asked you both here. The rest of the Council doesn’t know the reason I called the meeting.”
I look around at the other faces around the table, each of them looking just as confused as I am. “Then what is the reason?” I ask her.
“It’s time you come clean about Kait Malone.”
