“I’m sorry we can’t go inside, but there might be residual debris from the most recent cave-in, which your human body wouldn’t be able to stand.”
“No need to apologize,” I say, stepping over a pile of rotting wood. “I like living.”
“Well, I hope you enjoy climbing,” he gestures to the first ladder. Each ladder is nailed to the outer wall, forming a long line of rungs that travel to the top of the building.
“Did you do this?” I ask.
“More or less. It took a long time, but once it was finished, it made the climb up much more rewarding. Come on.”
“Good thing you gave me a mini-skirt,” I grumble, trying to pull down the hem of the skirt and accomplishing nothing.
He shrugs. “It was the only thing I could find.”
“Yeah, right.”
He waves me forward, and I back away. “No way I’m not letting you sneak a peek while I’m climbing toward my death.”
“You really think I’m going to trust you to stay behind me the whole way and not try to run?”
