Chapter 19: Ill-Omened
**Jake**
Nathan stands and pats Kait on the back. “Good morning. What’d you think of Jake’s stunning performance last night?” he asks Kait, who stands in the center of the room, face pale.
She blinks at him, then says, “Performance? You mean the fight?”
Nathan shrugs. “Sure. But most people who see an Alpha shifter for the first time tend to be somewhat amazed.”
“Nathan,” I sigh. He does this at times. He thinks I’m some amazing specimen that deserves to be shown off like a trophy.
He ignores me, waiting for Kait’s response.
“Yeah,” she tells him. “It was…different.”
Nathan looks at her with a raised eyebrow. “Different? Just different? I mean, he beat Cassandra in less than a minute, and all you say is it’s ‘different’?”
Kait’s face is rigid, eyes cast down at her feet.
“Nathan, leave it alone,” I tell him.
