The roles are switched

Mary's POV:

After the word left my mouth, I realized I made a mistake. He deserves it but I don't think I can make it out of here alive after saying it. Now, except god nobody can help me.

Oh, my lord only you can save me!

My anger for him rose again and intense hatred developed for him which made the fear vanish. Then my gaze landed on his stomach which was unguarded. So, I create a scenario in my head. Where I knee him hard in his stomach before he could hit me and then I run for my life. But before I could put this in action a voice made all our heads snap towards it.

"Enough!" a voice snapped which was full of authority echoing in silence. The voice belonged to Elias who was standing at the opening of this place.

He looked different. His expression which used to be always solemn was now different. He was looking straight at Brian's eyes with an icy gaze. But what is he doing here? how did he reached here at the right time? I guess lord answered by prayer!

But would they stop bullying? What if they even bully Elias along with me? Considering they are five and we are two. I am not going to count that boy who is still lying on the ground in fear.

But the thing that left me in bewilderment was the expression on everybody's face. Their eyes had widened, they were in fright. Even Brian, he became still. The person who was a second away to hit me did not dare to move. Hailey and Anna who were leaning on the wall had stood straight in fright too.

Everything was just confusing. I felt like my eyes were playing tricks with me. Why did they look afraid of him? Even though it is slightly frightening to look at his angry face considering he is always calm. But still aren't they the one who always mocks him and gangs him up.

How did the roles switch?

Elias shakes his head at them slowly with a look that says 'You guys had made a mistake'

He then turned his gaze towards me. He looked straight in my eyes and hold my gaze for the first time.

"Mary, come here" Elias called motioning with his gaze, his voice a little softer making my tummy flutter. I looked at everyone who still didn't moved from their places. Then I quickly made my way towards Elias and stood beside him with some space between us.

The boy who was lying on the ground had now stood up. He cautiously looked at his bullies still in fear and when they didn't show any sign of stopping him or playing with him a little more, he hastily came towards us and thanked Elias and ran off before Elias could say anything.

Elias shrugged looking at boy's retreating figure and then moved his gaze towards the Brian's gang, his gaze hardening again. He walked towards Brian and shoved something which was in his hand (which I didn't noticed until now) at Brian's chest. They are almost of same height. Brian slightly stumbled and then hold it. It was an envelope. He examined it.

Then I remembered the actual reason for coming here was to give Sam his book. I looked at Sam and found him already staring at me.

"Take this" I dead pan and threw it towards him aiming it perfectly at his chest. I didn't mean to copy Elias. And I was little harsher than him. Throwing a book like that.

I just couldn't make myself to give it to him nicely. And he caught the book before it could hit the ground. Sam tries to say something to me but, I ignored him. I couldn't bring it in myself to look at him again.

"Meet me after school" Elias said sternly to all of them giving them one last look. I saw Anna gulp after what Elias said.

What did he mean by it?

And.... Damn! Just how did the roles switched?

Elias then went out and I followed behind him. We walked silently neither of us saying anything.

Should I thank him? But how should I thank him? And if I ask him about their weird behavior after he came would he answer me? Should I ask it or not? And should I ask him the reason he was here? After I finished debating with my thoughts, I finally opened my mouth.

"Elias" I called him quietly, afraid that he might dislike that I am trying to talk to him.

He stopped walking and gave me his attention and stuffed both of his hands in his pockets. But he was not looking at me. He was simply looking ahead. Well, I got accustomed to him not looking at me by now.

"Thank you" I said softly.

"It wasn't a big deal" Elias said waving it off.

"It was!" I said disagreeing with him. "Not for you! But god knows what would have happened to that boy if you had not arrived at time"

Elias's lips lift up. It left me awestruck. Is he smiling?

He shakes his head still smiling. "Wasn't it you who saved him before me. Even if I wouldn't have arrived, you would have managed it fine and Sam wouldn't have let Brian bully you more than that"

"Probably I would have managed" I said. "Or not" I added in afterthought while shaking my head. "Anyway thanks. And... how can you be so sure that Sam would have saved me?"

"I saw him. If I wouldn't have arrived, then he would have reacted. Even though he would be slow to react" Elias said, smirking at the last sentence.

I chuckled. "Did I just sense a cockiness in your words?" I teased casually without thinking.

So stupid of me! It is the first time we are having a proper conversation and I am acting all cozy.

He was still looking ahead. I was afraid to look at his reaction so even I stopped looking at him and looked ahead too.

"It depends on how you regard it. You know, it can be regarded as a fact" Elias said teasingly too, which shocked me a little. Then both of us became silent. I tried to ask him something twice but stopped myself.

"Say it!" Elias said which made my gaze snapped towards him.

Woah! How did he know I wanted to say something without even looking at me?

"What was that all about? Why were they scared of you today?" I finally asked the thing which have been disturbing my mind from start.

"It's not about today. It's just that they did something which they vowed to me not to do" he explained vaguely. And Rose and Tracy came in our view. I guess they got tired of waiting and thought of looking for me.

"Whatever happened now it would be better if you would keep it a secret" he said looking pointedly at Tracy and Rose. Before I could disagree with him, he started walking and walked past Tracy and Rose. And they both sneaked a glance at him.

I went towards them before they could come towards me. Elias's words ringing in my head. His words which was said normally held more power than anyone would expect.

"What was that about? There we were waiting for you to come and here you are having quite a chat with Elias. Huh?" Tracy asked slightly annoyed.

"It was nothing like that. I have been searching for Sam around everywhere then at last I found him after a long time. That's why I have been still here" I said and tried to wave off the topic of Elias.

"Ok that explains why you didn't come to that spot yet. But it doesn't explain why you were with Elias?" Tracy said not letting it off.

"Yeah" Rose said agreeing with her. "Did he finally swallowed his pride and talked with you?" she asked.

"It was just... a... coincidence. When I went to give Sam his book, he came there too to give something to Brian. I know, shocking right?" I said the truth by skipping the whole details. Even though I wanted to narrate the whole incident to them, but I couldn't. His words stopping me.

"He came to give something to Brian?" Rose asked puzzled.

"Yeah" I nodded. But I forgot to ask him why.

"Damn! He doesn't really care, does he?" Tracy said.

"What?" I asked confused.

"He doesn't care that Brian mocks and sneer at him"

"Oh!"

What would their reaction be if they got to know about the recent events? And Elias didn't clear my any confusion. Instead he just created more. Why did they vow to him? And what exactly did they vow? And if Elias holds that much power than why does he let them make fun of him?

Meet me after school. Elias's words rang in my head. Well... I guess I know what to do to know all the answers.
