A BRAND NEW FRIEND

Raine's mother, Maui, looked at the little girl and asked, "what is your name dear?". The little girl gave Maui a toothy smile and answered, "Eclipse". "Wow, such a pretty name for a pretty girl. I saw what you did. You were so brave to take that wild dog head on. Thank you for saving Raine."

"No need to thank me aunty. I only did what was right", Eclipse said. Maui smiled at her and asked, "what are you doing here all alone? It's not safe. Where's your mother?". At the mention of her mother, Eclipse's face turned gloomy. She was used to seeing other children with their parents but she didn't have parents. "I don't have a mother and I don't have a father. I just have my grandmother." Maui looked at Eclipse pitifully and said, "Okay. Let's go to your grandmother then. I'd like to tell her about your heroic act". Eclipse nodded and led Raine and Maui to her shack.

"Granny, I'm home...", the little Eclipse called out to her grandmother. Daisy heard her granddaughter's voice and came out to the entrance of the shack to see Eclipse with two strangers.

Maui decided to greet Daisy first, "Hello ma'am I'm Maui and this is my daughter Raine."

"Yes, hello dear".

"I came here to thank you. Your granddaughter saved my daughter from a huge wild dog earlier. You raised her well. If she weren't there I wonder what would have happened to my Raine.", Maui praised Daisy's upbringing and Eclipse's heroic act. Daisy gaped at the woman thanking her. She was shocked upon hearing that her gentle Eclipse saved someone from a wild dog. She turned to Eclipse who gave her a broad smile. She smiled back at her.

"It's no problem. I'm glad my granddaughter could help you." She said to Maui.

"I'm so proud of you dear", Daisy said to Eclipse.

"Please don't stand there, come inside. I prepared some tea earlier", Daisy invited Maui inside but she politely refused, "No. I wouldn't want to bother you". Daisy insisted, "I wouldn't see it as a bother. Come inside". With that Raine and Maui followed Eclipse and Daisy inside. They went to the back of the shack. There was a small circular structure with firewoods in it. This was the people used to cook as they didn't have civilized structures used to cook by the people in Elora. They each sat on a log of wood and drank rose tea from clay cups.

Raine could be seen staring at Eclipse and Maui asked, "Do you like her?". Raine nodded like a lizard which caused the adults to laugh. Eclipse smiled and stood up from her log of wood. She went over to Raine. "Do you want to be my friend?", she asked Raine. "Yes, you're my new best friend", Raine smiled and answered Eclipse's question. She linked her arm with Eclipse's and both girls went to play. Maui and Daisy smiled at the children. From then, the two families became close. Maui would always visit Daisy and help her with some work while Raine and Eclipse would stick to each other like glue.
