Chapter One

"Kayla…" a tiny voice whispered my name repeatedly and each time, sounding as close as ever.

It gradually became louder than expected so I opened my eyes in bits until it finally opened widely.

"Kayla... you're finally awake." a man spoke with delight in his tone. It sounded as if he were shocked I'd woken up.

"I'm Dr. Henry, the family's doctor." He claimed and smiled softly.

"What I'm I doing here?" I was confused at the setting I had found myself in - A hospital?

He sighed." Well, I know this might sound crazy and hurtful but it's best to tell you now.You got into a fatal car accident with your mom on the way to the airport to meet your dad." He paused.

" In the end, the driver died and your mother…your mother's body was nowhere to be found making it difficult to determine what had happened to her."

"  As for you, you seriously got injured. Your brain got partly damaged which landed you losing your memory."

" We all thought this brain surgery would  end unsuccessful but it didn't, hopefully"

"I… what?"

"Well the painful part is… you can lose your memory again, if only something triggers you, which upon test and experiment, proves that, that something is blood."

"Your memory is now fragile, Kayla."

*Two Years Later*

Kayla

I brushed my long shiny blonde hair as I stared at the full length mirror. I paused while my eyes trailed on the emerald green MACCAPANI lurex- detailed maxi dress I'd match with my piercing black heels.

I stood still quiet, admiring every bit of me.I knew it was a stupid idea to get prepared for a party without the permission of my dad.

I even pictured how dumb I'd look if he'd say'' No you can't go to that party."

Already he's angry at me for barging into his office, claiming that I wanted to talk to him when he was literally at an important meeting with other Mafia bosses.

I'm eighteen and I can do whatever I want whenever I want. The fact that he owns a Mafia doesn't prove his total control over me.

I heard knocks on my door which saved me from zoning out. I flinched at how loud the bangs were and finally had the urge to speak.

"I'm coming!" I yelled at whoever it was, drew closer to the door and opened it.

" Your father wants to speak with you." Kevin, my father's personal assistant, kindly spoke and turned back to wherever he was going.

My heart raced as I walked down the hall, leading to my father's office. My footsteps were heavy and loud to let him know I was coming.

I placed my hand on the door knob, took in a deep breath and turned it slowly yet hesitant to walk in, which I did anyway.

I stood confidently in front of my father, not letting him see the fear I'd held in me.

" What was so important to talk about that you literally interrupted the meeting?." He strongly questioned, then I met his piercing blue eyes and a shiver went down my spine.

He glared at my outfit and I could sense confusion in his facial expression.

" I- I wanted to ask for permission to go out for Laura's birthday party and I'm really really sorry for interrupting."

I saw his raised eyebrows lowering and the rage in his eyes cool down as he opened his mouth.

"Kayla," he softly spoke.

" You know how dangerous this world is, especially at night. I'm also terribly sorry but you are not allowed to go."

His words stung, twisting deep into my flesh like a knife.

"But- but she's my best friend and perhaps you promised me I could go anywhere when I'm eighteen-

" Don't make me angry Kayla, now go back to your room and take the pills Dr. Henry gave you." He raised his voice at me.

" Fine... but if I'm to be honest, you're the worst dad ever." I yelled back with tears brimming in my eyes as I stormed out.

I didn't give up so easily. I needed a plan. I wiped the tears that were left under my eyes and headed straight to Nolan's room.

"What?" He glared at me surprisingly.

Nolan is my cousin and the heir to the French Mafia. This was because I was the only child of my father and with my condition I can't take over the mafia.

" I need your help." I softly let it out.

"Lemme guess, you got invited to a party and dad is not allowing you to go." He simply recognized and I rolled my eyes at him.

" Yes." I said with a lowered tone out of disappointment.

" What do you want me to do-

" Help me sneak out." I sharply interrupted him. " See, you don't have to do anything, you just have to lend me your car and I won't bother you any longer."

"And what makes you think I'll do that?" He chuckled.

" Please." I pleaded. That wasn't enough so I had to bring out my puppy eyes, the ones no one could resist.

He looked at me, disgusted at what he saw.

"That's not going to work on me." He admitted.

I gave up and walked back to the door when he threw something at me.

I turned back angrily only to find his car keys on the floor.

"Thanks a lot." I excitedly responded.

I left his room, walked to the garage and straight to his car. I had to lie to the bodyguards that I was given permission before they could let me out.

One of them went to the extent of following me, which I thought was absurd.

Seriously, I was tired of living a suffocating life.

In my next life, I want to be the daughter of a regular person. I want to see how the other world feels.

I drove to Laura's house to pick her up. She stood at the frontier of her house looking really disappointed.

She wore a wide-sleeve lace black minidress which fitted her perfectly. With her autumn hair styled in wispy bangs.

She rolled her eyes at me and finally opened the car to enter.

"What took you so long?" She asked me angrily as I started the car.

" He didn't allow it like we thought. Believe me, I tried as much as possible to convince him but it was worth nothing. I even lied that it was your birthday party." I replied honestly.

"Really? " Laura chuckles.

I don't know what really upset me but I suddenly became moody. It sure was from the shots.

"Yes." I groaned. "I couldn't say it was Zayn's party. My father hates that guy." I chuckled.Zayn is also my best friend after all.

" I know right." She added. The drive became quiet since I was focused on driving and she was busily putting on mascara.

We finally arrived but were a little late. We stepped out of the car to meet beer bottles on the lawn. A really loud thumping music, usually the popular ones mixed with some old classics.

Some of the people were inside and a few people in clusters sitting around outside either making out, drinking or just talking.

The messy room had empty bottles laid on the ground, waiting for someone to trip over them. I almost was a victim.

As for the people in this crowded area, they reminded me of the beer bottles: empty and useless.

As I stepped over the god-awful mess, I noticed the music playing in the background.

Laura excused herself because her boyfriend, who I disliked a lot, called her.

I stood at the corner of the room, judging others like I always do when I spotted Zayn weaving his way through the crowd of champagne- baring waiters.

"Hey girl," Zayn said, coming over to give me a handshake. "How's it going? Are you likin' the party?"

I nodded. "Very much so. I am delighted to have been invited to attend."

Zach slapped me on the back. "Stop with such nonsense." He chuckled. "You talk too properly. Loosen up, don't be so stiff." He shoved a beer in front of my face. "Hey drink it. You need it more than anyone in this room."

I smiled and reluctantly took the bottle and started to drink. "I don't plan on staying long, Zayn."

" What's the problem? Your dad right?"

"Yeah" I admitted.

"Ethan's coming."I dropped the beer as he spoke.

"What- what?Ethan,as in the coolest kid, here tonight? at your party?" The words were heavy when coming from my mouth.

"Yep. But, unless you stay for a little longer there is no way he'll be able to meet you. So, go on if you want."

"No- uh," I grinned, "I'll stay."

"Are you sure?" Zayn picked up the beer from the ground and handed it to me.

"I'm sure," I said eagerly.

Everybody knows that I have a huge crush on Ethan and he's coming here tonight?

I drank shots after shots. I was tired of waiting and the smell of the room was suffocating. I needed to get out of there immediately.

"Hey, hey.!" I heard Zayn scream behind me while I headed to the door.

"What happened? Don't you remember? Ethan? " He spoke as he drew close to me with his hands open.

"Tell me the truth, is he coming or not?" I questioned him.

He didn't answer so I shook him silly until he..... threw up all over my heels.

"Gross. Yuck, damn!" I shouted. "Everyone in this messy room was staring at me in silence.

"Dude, just chill," Zayn told me.

"I don't think so." And with that, I walked out of the house, got in my car, turned on the engine and prepared to leave the scene. I couldn't believe I trusted Zayn." Seriously, I should have known by now.

I don't know what upset me but I suddenly became moody. It sure was from the shots.

My father was right. I shouldn't have come at all.

Before driving off I thought for a moment about returning to the party. I mean, I did have fun and I never experienced so many people treating me as if they were my friends before.

Stepping on the gas pedal, I drove away from the dreaded house I had come to despise. I tried to stop thinking about how I was lied to by Zayn.

I tried to also stop thinking about the nasty smell that was lingering on my heels thanks to Zayn's barf.

I drove recklessly to nowhere. I had no idea of where I was. It was midnight and I was probably lost somewhere in the woods.

I'm so doomed. I didn't want to call my father less he would know I'd sneaked out.

The quietness in the woods was so intimidating.

It was louder than noise and I could feel it around me. SILENCE. Finally, an owl howled. Then followed a weird sound.

Sort of a gunshot. I thought it was my imagination but it kept on sounding.

I decided to get closer to find out what was happening. I tried walking quietly but the dried leaves just kept on crunching.

A man, beaten up and seriously injured standing from a distance. I couldn't see his face well too. He looked innocent and I thought of helping him out.

I mean this isn't a big deal. I'm a Mafia's daughter. Trust me, I've seen things way worse than this and I'm always prepared for such.

I walked a little closer when I noticed another man pointing a gun to the injured man.

Just when he was about to shoot him in the head from behind, I pulled out the foldable metal bar I always carry around, for you know just in case.

I hit him with it from behind making him unconscious and finally got on his knees weighing him to fall on his face.

I turned on the flashlight on my phone to look at him.

He had dark hair which looked a little wet because he was sweating. It revealed his bold hazel siren- shaped eyes that seem to hold a world of secrets and a chiseled jawline, sharper than blade.

I looked down to see his arm suffering from a gunshot with blood oozing out.

I started to feel unconscious. My phone slipped from my hand and my body was shutting down, finding it's way to the ground.

Everything turned blur until I finally closed my eyes.
