“See?” Bernard said. “We’re making some real progress. There are positive feelings on both sides. We just have to figure out what to do about your problem.”

“I don’t have a problem,” I told him, slugging down the rest of my drink. “My so-called friends are the ones with the problem. Especially once I figure out who’s behind this little fiasco.”

“The problem,” the man said, as if I hadn’t spoken, “is that there are real feelings between the two of you. I suspect that these feelings haven’t come out into the open yet, so let’s work on that aspect for a few minutes. J.T., how do you feel about Armand?”

The kid squirmed in his seat. His face reddened once more. “I guess I like him okay. He’s kind of fun once you get to know him.”

“That’s a start. I’m not sure you’re being entirely truthful with yourself, but we’ll let it stand for now. Armand, what about you? How do you feel about J.T.?”

“That ought to be damn obvious. Let’s talk about what the kid needs to do to get over me.”
