Bernard nodded to the kid. “Why do you feel you’re not a couple, then, Armand? What’s keeping you from trying a relationship with J.T.?”

I thought about diving from the balcony at that point. “I said I’m not doing this, pal. It’s none of your business why I do the things I do.” I turned back to the kid, shook a finger at him. “And you’ve got it all wrong, anyway.”

I shoved a foot between Bernard’s chair and the wall. For a scrawny little guy, he didn’t move easily. I rolled my shoulders and eyed the chair. If I took hold of each of the arms, I should be able to drag him out of the way.

“I ain’t got nothing wrong,” J.T. said. He thrust a finger of his own in my direction. “You’re the one that kicked me out of your place. You told me to find somebody my own age. The only time you even looked at me after that was when me and Luis—”
