“The thing is,” he told them seriously, “these guys feel like they know me, from watching all those movies. I know a lot of actors who blow that off, feel like they’re better than the fans. But you’ve got to remember that they’re the ones paying us in the end. If you act like an asshole, they’re not going to buy your next film, and then where are you?”

His partner, a balding lawyer, leaned over the table. “Don’t take everything he says too seriously,” he said. “Ted loves being the center of attention. If I didn’t watch, he’d be hitting every table in the place, offering to pose for selfies.”

Ted had laughed and squeezed the man’s arm. The look they’d shared had given J.T. a strange feeling. He’d never really spent much time around happy couples. That sort didn’t show up on the streets looking for a little tail. It must be nice to share something like that with another person.
