White Lily, Blue Iris

Iris sinclair's pov

Today I let my black hair fall to my shoulder instead of tying it into braids. The ends of my silky hair curls, exactly the way I wanted it.

My hairstyle changes every second day. Day one I have double braids, the second day I'd have it hang loose and it would be naturally curly from a whole day of molding, day three I'd go back on having braids again, and so on and so on.

I slip on my grey sweater and my black plaid skirt along with my thick white leggings, it'd keep me warm in the early autumn. For the shoes I chose to settle for the brand new pair of white running shoes I got at my last year's birthday. Well it wasn't new, it was Lily's worn out ones, a 'charity' from her. Everything in my wardrobe is a hand me down from her or my step mother.

I frowned when I noticed a big ink stain on the grey sweater. Lily probably damaged her old clothes on purpose just to annoy me.

I stared at my complexion in the full length mirror, trying to find an angle that would hide the stain with my purse. My brows furrowed when I saw my white running shoes. Is so white, it will get dirty too easily, is not suitable for the place I'm going today.

The place I'm going with is the garden near my house. I always go there when I need to rest my eyes or just to clear my mind. But instead of casually walking there like usual we will be squatting in the mud, collecting specimens for our biology project.

By which I mean ' we '. I mean me and David. I really don't wanna go with him but I have nobody else to go with now that Bianca ditched me.

"Didn't you said 'fuck no, i rather die than to do it with you?'" He quoted me with a mock extra pitchy tone when I asked him if he wanna do it together.

"Yes but I've changed my mind."

"What did you say iris? I couldn't hear you" He smirked.

"Ugh." I groaned,

"Oh I guess I'll just do it with Ryan then. Cya." He's enjoying toying with me.

"I said! I wanna do the biology project with you!!! You fucking deaf!!" I'm nearly screaming now, a few student in the hallway frowned at me but I didn't care.

"Geez calm down Sinclair, I didn't know you wanna be partners with me this bad." He grins from ear to ear.

"Shut up David Singh!"

So here I am, in my boots and waiting for my sworn enemy to spend an entire afternoon with him in a garden. We had a big fight over which place we'd go. He insisted the garden at his house is better than the public garden, so egoistic.

" Hey sinclair! " he waved when he saw me.

"Hey" I say in a not so enthusiastic tone.

This project is very simple. So basically each group will pick a plant to observe, they will research about the plant online, then collect a specimen to study carefully under the microscope, eventually they will make a beautiful hand drawn poster and it will be hung in the science lab for the rest of the year.

"Flowers are so beautiful." David lamented. "I was wrong when I insisted public garden is going to be full of trash.

"Yeah, I walk here all the time, it is really relaxing. I volunteered here too, watering the plant and stuff. Before grade twelve starts." I set my gaze upon a bush of jasmine. Last time I was here they barely sprouted.

"You are so lucky, I wish I had something relaxing near my house. But instead of flowers, all I have is endlessly tall skyscrapers surrounding my house." He sighed.

"Stop being ungrateful." I scolded. "At least you don't have to take a bus one hour to get to school each day. I had to wake up at five thirty everyday."

"I guess you are right. But don't assume my life is perfect, everyone has their own struggle."

"Oh and what struggle do you have? Mr.rich."

He ignored me and we kept walking. I name each flower that I pass. Blue cornflower, amidst the grass, swaying gently in the wind. Sunflower stands tall and proud next to it, almost the same height as David. Rudbeckia planted next to the sunflowers, looking almost identical except for the ball-like centre other than the sunflower's flat one…

My breath hitched as I named each flower that we passed, delightful colour clouds my vision like a dream, for a moment i forgot about the bastard besides me and the purpose of why we came here.

"These are beautiful aren't they?" David exclaimed, gesturing at a few white lilies huddled in a pot.

"I don't like white flowers in general. To me every single colour has a meaning. White means death, blue means serenity, red means passion, pink means love, yellow means creativity , black means regret, orange means joy. Green means guilt. But I especially don't like white lilies because that reminds me of my sister" I suddenly realised I said too much to david. He's not my friend and I'm not his. I wasn't supposed to pour my heart out for him.

I walked faster, eager to get away from the ominous flower. "I'm sorry I dated Lily last year." He whispered as he quickened his pace to match mine.

"This is not something to say sorry about. What does dating Lily have anything to do with me?" I scoffed. What you should apologise about is traumatising me for years.

After a few minutes of silence, he finally spoke again. "White lilies are pretty, but you know what's prettier?"

"What?"

"Blue iris" He leans into me, for a second I thought he was going to violet me with his kisses but he didn't. "Blue like your eyes. Your eyes are so pretty Sinclair, is indigo when you are sad, cerulean when you are happy, lapis when you are excited, denim when you are angry."

"And your eyes are the colour of bullshit" I snapped without thinking but david only laughed.

He laughed so hard that he bend down to wipe his tears "Sinclair you are so mean"

"Well you weren't exactly nice to me before either, you were only nice today. Remember in grade ten you made fun of my eyes saying they are so blue that it looks like aliens?" my voice trailed off.

"I'm sorry sinclair, and i feel green about it" It took me a few minutes to remember he is using my colour symbol to describe his mood. " Could we start over? Forgive the little foolish childish boy that I was."

My ears must be playing a trick on me, David Singh feels guilty for bullying me? I've been waiting all my life for him to say it. "Took you long enough for you to admit you are foolish and childish."
