'Thoughts'

"Dialogue"

Basketball defined my world. I vividly recall being an 11-year-old, captivated by the Bulls' finals in 1995-1996. Jordan's mesmerizing footwork and his picture-perfect fadeaway left an indelible impression on me. From heart-pounding buzzer beaters to exhilarating poster dunks, I knew then that playing in the NBA was my dream. Yet, fate seemed to have different plans. While other kids sprouted up over summers, transforming almost beyond recognition, I remained stuck at 5'4" as I entered freshman year of high school.

Undeterred amidst towering opponents, I poured my heart into tryouts, outscoring every other freshman with 15 points in a full-court 5v5 and dishing out 6 assists. I believed this performance could secure my spot on the team, maybe even pave a path to the NBA. However, the coach's words in his office shattered that hope.

"Son, you did exceptionally well out there. Your scoring ability and unique passing touch stood out. Your spacing created numerous open looks for your teammates."

In that moment, I felt a sense of belonging, envisioning a future on the court despite the towering competition. The prospect of making it to the NBA seemed tangible. Yet, the coach's next words pierced through my dreams.

"But, quite frankly, you're not tall enough. I'm sorry"

The world went dark, and subsequent moments blurred into static. I hastily left the office before the coach could finish. That day, I cried for hours at home. My mom checked on me, but I insisted I was okay. Despite the coach's verdict, I continued to practice, seeking solace in nearby parks, determined to prove everyone wrong about my height.
