Chapter 4

KAYLA'S POV

It's Monday already. For some reason, I felt really nervous having to wake up that morning. I was scared I might not grab the deal.

Austin had motivated me that morning with his gentle and sweet words that had left me smiling from ear to ear.

I dressed up in my favorite royal purple suit that always made me look classy as hell. My jet black hair was packed into a tight bun. I highlighted my face with makeup that gave me a little baddie look.

I glanced at myself one more time in the mirror, making sure I was not looking horrible because it might make me look ridiculous.

For Christ Sake Kayla, think positively!' My subconsciousness warned me.

The door opened, revealing Austin. He was dressed up in a black hoodie, and a sweatpant. His dirty blonde hair was styled to the side. He smiled at me as he wrapped his arms around me.

"Damn! you're hot." He said and I flicked his nose as I placed a soft kiss on his lips.

"You don't look bad either." I complimented, not missing the smile that found its way to his lips.

"Thanks baby doll. Let's get going now." I nodded and placed my hand on his outstretched hand. We walked to the car.

As usual, the streets of New York were filled with people, who were minding their damn business. Traffic hit us, but we were able to reach before the scheduled time for the interview.

Austin squeezed my hands, giving me a smile. "Don't worry, you'll get the job." He assured me. He gave me a gentle squeeze with a bright smile plastered on his face.I ignored him, my mind thinking of what will possibly go wrong. Everything! Everything could possibly go wrong in there. My heart began to beat faster than usual.

We walked to the receptionist office, that happens to be filled with a lot of people who I presumed were here for the same reason as I was.

"Good morning Mr Austin Mackenzie." The lady behind the desk grinned at him the moment we walked into the building. I rolled my eyes, slightly irritated by the seductive voice she used.

She wasn't glancing my way, just only at my boyfriend who wasn't doing a thing about it.

"Morning Miss Liliana. How are you this morning?" He asked her with a very bright smile.

"Well, I would say good, but I'm exhausted already from yesterday." She laughed and I scoffed almost loudly. She turned my way, raising her brows at me. Bitch was trying to pretend like she never noticed my presence. "And you are?" She asked in a completely rude tone.

I attempted to speak, but Austin beat me to it. "She's Kayla Anderson, my girlfriend."

I smiled proudly when I saw the shock expression on her face, her eyes almost bulging out of its socket.

"Hi." I waved at her, but she ignored me.

Austin laughed. "Is Xander in?"

"Yes, Mr Mackenzie."

Austin took my hands into his, and we made our way to the elevator.

"I see what you did there." Austin broke the silence. I looked up to look at his face but he was typing away on his phone.

"What?" I deadpanned.

"Being jealous. Come on baby doll, I'm all yours no one will ever take me away from you."

I nodded with a smile just as the elevator dings. We stepped out of the elevator. My eyes scanned the very beautiful art works on the wall. It was beautiful. I saw a painting of a guy who I presumed was Xander. Maybe, or maybe not.

Austin Stopped at a door, so did I. He raised his hands to knock, but the door was pulled open by a brunette who was walking out at full speed. Her hair was a bit out of place like she was rushing to get ready, and her gown all crumpled up.

"Watch out!" She scowled at us. She pushed past Austin and walked away. Her pointy heels echoed in the hall until she got into the elevator.

A chuckle escaped my lips, as I tried so hard not to think of the possibility that Xander had his breakfast in his office already.

I walked into the office with Austin, my eyes taking in the beauty of the office. Although the office is not so stylish, with a lot of decorations, I prefer it to so many decorations.

The walls are painted in gray, a desk situated by the left wing of the office, and a picture frame hung on the wall. A book shelf was situated at a corner that had a lot of files scattered on it.

I looked down to see Austin and Xander staring at me. An amused smile on Austin's face and a scowl on Xander's face.

I chuckled awkwardly and took a seat beside Austin.

"Is she the one for the interview?" Xander asked, his eyes washing over me. He kept a straight face, not even sparing me a smile. Considering that I'm his cousin's girlfriend, I expected a warm greeting, but I was greeted with a cold one.

"Yes."

"She could have waited downstairs with everyone else." He snapped at Austin. I felt my intestines coil, my skin went pale immediately.

"Come one Xan, we already talked about this." A frustrated Austin said, hissing in the process. "She's my girlfriend."

Although Xander's face was still hard, he still gave in to interviewing me. Austin squeezed my hands before leaving the office.

"Are you a graduate?" He asked, not looking at me but his laptop in front of me.

I gulped, fear gripping me at his hard voice. "Yes. Actually, I graduated like-"

"I don't care." He snapped, making me flinch. He still was not looking at me. "What did you major in?"

"Business."

He nodded, as if that was the answer he needed. "What makes you think you're more fit for this job than the others waiting downstairs?"

I was not sure I could do a better job than some of the folks downstairs, but I really needed the job. I mean, I traveled from Oak Hill down to New York just to get this job.

"Answer me, I don't have enough time to waste."

I wanted to cry at the moment, but I braced myself up.

"I assure you that I'd do an excellent job sir. I might not be better than most people down there, but I have the potential. I'm ready for whatever this job throws at me."

He did not say anything for a minute. He wasn't looking at me either.

"You can leave. I'll get back to you later." He waved me off and I left his office.

Austin pulled me into a hug the moment he saw me walking out. "Don't worry baby doll. If you don't get the job, I can always find you something else." I nodded at his soothing words.

"What did he say to you?"

I wiped the single tear on my cheeks. "He'll get back to me later." I said. I hope he did.

"Can we go grab some coffee?" Austin asked, taking my hands into his.

"No. Let's wait till he's done with every other person." Missing the job will be a big blow to me.

"Okay, but when we're done we're going." He said and I nod in agreement.

The interview took longer than I expected. I wished I had gone to grab some coffee with Austin when he requested. My stomach was rumbling loudly already.

I snuggled closer to Austin, ignoring the stares I got from the people who could not mind their damn business.

Each time Liliana came to get someone in the waiting room, my heartbeat quickened.

My fingers and legs were crossed, when I see Liliana walking towards us.

"Miss Anderson?" She called, her eyes hard on my body. I jumped up from my seat.

"That's me," I said with a huge smile.

She rolled her eyes but I ignored her. "You're needed in Mr Xander Wellington's office."

Excitement filled me, as I squealed in happiness. I was getting really excited that my subconsciousness began to prick me. I waved off the negative thought off my head. I need to be positive. I had a good feeling about it.

I walked down the hallway, my wobbly legs not really supporting me.

I entered his office, and he glanced at me briefly before facing his laptop. "Sit." I sat down, facing him like an obedient student.

"I've interviewed a lot of people who are far better than you." My heart skipped. He really didn't ask much about me, and he was already comparing. "But I'm doing this for Austin. He's my family and I wouldn't want to disappoint him, since he's madly in love with you." A smile crept up to my lips.

"Does this mean I got the job?" I was overly excited, pulling at my nails, grinning from ear to ear.

He nodded. "But, the moment you mess things up, I promise to replace you immediately."

"Yes sir."

I stood up to leave, when he called me back.

"You start tomorrow. I'll have Liliana give you the rule book. Now leave." I nodded, and left.

Although I felt bad for how I was being treated by Xander, I knew one thing for sure. My family and I were going to get everything we always wanted.

Mum and Liam would be so proud of me.
