Honestly I think you should of gone for something more normal having a dragon as his animagus basically lifts him to a dark lords level of power all he would have to do would be transform to win.
It would have been cooler if the mc was a normal animal and through magical achievements elevates his animagus into a magical creature.
Pls tell me he actually turns into a Dragon
