just gold isn't worth it in the long run for his family, he needs to estsblish a bank for the future with this gold and maybe become one of the first bankers that backed the goverment in the 1920 crisis. and start a security and/or mercenary company to protect his family and his gold for such a huge amount of wealth concentrated in one small family is extremely dangerous. tall trees get blown by the winds or chopped down faster.

so how is he gonna explain how he knows where the mines are at

Gold would be quite useful, when the conflict starts, but it might be better, if it ends on a smaller scale. The British might be willing to give in, if they can get their money without much fighting, then having gold might come in handy to pay them off.
