Hmmm… I’m going to take a wild guess here and say the smiling killer is Lupin’s wolf and Lily in using that ritual gave Lupin a sort of Dr Jekyll and Dr Hyde situation.

True it was just an idea that popped in my head wasn’t expecting anyone to take my shot in the dark and like it. But regarding lily I’m not convinced she or even James and Sirius are truly dead as this fanfic takes elements from other franchises like the phantasmal beasts from fate and how wizards were originally more magus like and to quote a certain faker from that franchise.
