Not sure why he was running late, seems a bit random for something so important to him. Also, author gave him photographic memory. This is always risky as you should no longer be able to use excuses like he forgot to do things from now on. It’s always really lazy and annoying when ‘I forgot’ is used as an excuse anyway, so I’m looking forward to never seeing those words in the story again… right?
