For a while I thought that this novel was going to surprise and portray the church as a good and charitable organization as ideally they should be. However, I completely understand the authors' decision to portray churches as questionable organizations or outright villains. It is basically impossible to imagine an organization with so much mass control power not using this power for its own and political benefit, especially when we know our history. The church basically has the perfect brainwashing structure, all you have to do is say "And God said," and bam! At least 50% of followers will do what was said without even questioning the veracity of such words. So it's just being very naive to imagine that people (church leaders) won't use this power.
