You would think that since he's from a future time line that he'd know about, and possibly understand, how to construct a water wheel to power a hammer system that works off the spinning of a drive shaft to leather belts driving a crank shaft to pulp the wood into paper.

The more I think about it, the more it confuses me. In a world that has a low literacy rate, what is the point of making paper in bulk? Even if you then decide to 'invent' the printing press, you are still in a niche market. Investing in farm machinery, would be a better first start, even forestry equipment would be better than paper.

I don't think the MC remembers that much information. The author could have at least given a little trick to the main character during the course. As it is, it doesn't seem convincing to me.
