I think it just common basic knowledge, the shaman didn't even gone into really elaborate mental gymnastics or secrets,.. I think you are really nitpicking here, like if this was a xianxia novel you would complain about a qi refiner cultivator explain that they refine qi with breathing techniques and visualisation or meditation.... Very generic and don't sound like something you think is a secret unless it's an urban setting / hidden world, etc. But so far magic is available for everyone even if it require years for "untalented"
mhm yes I had expected it would be small. That seems the most advantageous start though, as you can develop your abilities first without as much consequence as if it were big.

what a way to set up the potential for this character! with this trajectory, he will be able to maintain his life as he strengthens his body, and familiarizes himself with magic. although his spells are not powerfull, he will be able to use them more often when he is stronger. this also means his skill is so high that he can still see his spark when it is way smaller than most others. a well formed protagonist!
