Well if you want my reasoning as the author. It may seem like a short time has passed as the reader, and for even I the author, but in novel time. Mo Xiaowen and Old Ox have been meeting each other every day for almost a year. The only people they speak to in the Sect and in general (besides business) is each other. As well as the Senior Brother Old Ox has a sense of responsibility for Mo Xiaowen. While Old Ox is somewhat naive at times I hope I didn't really portray him as such. The red beam is somewhat relevant but that will be explained much later with the vague plan I currently have, but you've been pretty close in your theories.
