There are a few minor edits I would do to increase readability. You can add emotion, also, by making the mother more dramatic, like she sighs, her eyebrows furrow, as she gasps for air. It was like a deep burden had suddnely sunk into her chest, before she managed to lift it off and speak once more. You know, something dramatic lol.
