I don't think Earl should feel the least bit guilty, even thinking it was suicide. He had agreed to meet her, despite her claims of suicide being just manipulation. And he had already put up with far more than he should have from her. Everything in her life, including him leaving, was entirely her fault! He worked at helping her way more than he even should have so he is not guilty or responsible! Her mother, on the other hand, knew she was very mentally unstable and either hid it or used her, actively making things worse, instead of getting her help. If it had been suicide the only one that should feel guilty is Caroline! Ironically, her murder is also probably tied back to Caroline too!
