I don't want to comment about whether it was right to kill off the MC's mom or not since it is your story, but when did they actually leave the house? Or was the point of that being the MC thinks too much like he can be carefree about it like a person messing with a smartphone for any reason that they are kind of on auto pilot and don't notice anything else unless it's big, they widen their focus, or something else, like me sometimes.
