oh boy, is this a reference to ouroboros with the eternal cycle of destruction and rebirth? I wonder how they will go back to the river, the chapter makes seem as if they ended up on the moon looking back at earth. Maybe they need to be out of the loop to reach the estuary.

That explains the ever flowing water really well but obviously, all along its path are zones indicating future, present and past.
