There are some awesome parallels here. Neph is the sun, burning so bright that she hurts those around her ( leading the army to their deaths). Sunny is the sea dark and mysterious with countless horrors hiding inside (the shadows in the core).

I wonder if the Black Sea wasn’t the curse itself but the by product of sealing it away the real curse being the deathly sun which a sun is a star similar to the being that fell from above that got compared to nephis. Meaning the Black Sea being filled with monsters was just something those monsters did to survive the sun and that’s why they don’t see as many high level monsters like in that forbidden mountain range
