Riftan is clearly hurt by what happened 3 years ago so is Maxi the best thing to do is talk to each other when they are ready. Progress is small but it’s a start until they can be fully open with each other. Baby step is what they need to do to come together fully. After everything they’ve been through they can be able to go through anything together.

at some point, I would think that Maxi throwing pine cones and snow balls would get through to Riftan. I have to believe he still loves her and vice versa... On Riftan perspective he believes Maxi abandoned him due to his past with his mother who abandon him for a man who never pay attention to her. As a reader perspective Maxi didn't abandon you, she went to the Mage Tower so you wouldn't lose everything and yes she also did for herself to show her worth and she said she was going to come back. When someone abandoned person never comes back, so Maxi didn't really abandon you and she did kept her promise of coming back and she did came back.

Finally she admitted missing him to death! He needed to know she missed him to the point of taking any offer to return as soon as possible. They need time alone, something almost impossible under the circumstances, but at least a breakthrough happened. Thank you, author!

Knowing Riftan who tends to never open up and keep everything to himself, I would love he has a civil conversation with Maxi about his mother suicide and how it affected him and why he runaway from home and about his stepfather.

Would be no fun if they resolved it so soon, I for one like a cold riftan and maxi trying to win him over. Be great to have some extra drama other than just monsters maybe the duke, Agnes or the king could add a little. Something is missing
