I don’t think the author understands how expensive construction can be. Those millions MC has to renovate the place would not even be close to enough for that amount of work. Maybe it’s enough for one of the 5 projects, but even then not likely. Especially if he blows most of it on luxury materials (which also don’t automatically become something you can use in construction)

This whole thing about precious metals and jems is stupid. They would be for investment when the markets recover, not for building. Nothing would be made of gold and jems. Those would be ascents. Precious woods would be a better investment for interior designs. The majority of the consternation will be iron, steel, and cement.

You know there was no need to write about this stuff in detail. It just gives us an idea of how inadequately the writer is familiar with such things. So, instead of focusing on things he/she don't know about, I would have preferred for him/her to focus on the fantasy or sci-fi aspect.
