OK the way I thought his school was going to work is that he would get to hold onto a single enemies ability and perhaps trade it out when he wanted to. The way you have written that is ridiculously over powered
the author probably doesn't have plans to re write this horrible and shitty start. You don't need to re write his choices, just his reasons and options.
Man pull a all rounder Bow for stealth and range and weakening enemys before they get in range. Daggers for CQC like caves or fighting many around you for quick slices and stabs. Sword or spear for brutality or head on fights or duels
