Maddie has grown up fast due to the king while her sister is still playing fantasy situations in her head that she has become blind. I think if something bad were to happen to Maddie, Beth would do nothing yet the shoe is on the other foot and Maddie is saving Beth. The bond they have is broken by Beth’s blindness.
