I hate to say this but any family with more than 2 kids will have a black sheep, one kid that is less favored or looled after by the parents. It is a good thing that most families have become smaller in recent decades.

China is an extremely competitive society. Especially during the one child period of time. Having parents like this that only look at advantages for themselves isn’t uncommon. It isn’t even uncommon in countries like the US where culture generally frowns upon it. One thing that this author hasn’t done well at though is giving us a reason to think RanRan is being poorly behaved. It’s not like she is running wild or out of control in front of them. She might not be super ultra respectful but I don’t see Yu’er being super respectful. Hopefully we get a better view soon.
