In the context of any story the mc is either the self insert or the toy of the stories author since whichever power of the day is messing with him it is still you doing things to make the story interesting, even if all you did is tug at their attention to pull it towards the mc. So it could only be you or your poor scapegoat who may or may not deserve what is going to happen to them as a result of your actions.
