This is terrible. So the gambler killed the unborn baby because she wanted to return to a father? I'm sorry but if it were me I would never forgive you how do you know if someone like that will kill you.. If she had been offered a more attractive offer from her family, I think such a person would definitely accept it. Her character is not very good. She treats her lady as if she were her boss, so this is not the attitude of an ordinary maid.

Sorry but ugly crying and genuine regret do not atone for poisoning a pregnant woman to force a miscarriage. In my eyes, her original willingness to do the crime (no matter the incentive) shows her inner evil. Even if she means well now, her principles are weak and her will easily shaken!! MC should continue to be wary. I feel pity for the poor lady who had to suffer such betrayal.

Hui'er is not a victim she made a choice for a selfish gain. For people who abandon her instead of someone who took her in and treated her very well. She chose to kill a person for information that may or may be real. She made that choice to KILL another human being.

She still killed the baby. She chose to do it. No excuses.

I don’t really agree with some commentators. I THINK people shouldn’t label others if they haven’t gone through what they’ve been through. The reason why I’m saying that I don’t REALLY agree with some, is that most aren’t saying things along the lines that “I wouldn’t have done so” because that would be completely idiotic. Most people don’t have to make a choice like that, so labeling someone as “evil” or “internally evil” is evil itself. By doing so, you’re condemning someone because you THINK you wouldn’t do so. But you probably would. That is human nature. Adding to that, she was subjugated to becoming a servant in an environment where any action could get you killed or sold off. Considering her former state, that’s like any of us being sold off by our addicted father, who you very much love (in this case), being torn away from your mother and sibling (or just mother or father), being forced to work as a slave for someone else, escape, find out that your (the family that you love) family isn’t where you last saw them, and be forced to come back to survive. At that point, desperation would kick in. So what I’m saying is that I don’t THINK. THINK. OPINION. that people should be judgmental of her. But what do my opinions matter?

Ok author-sama, I'll warn you now that this is a very negative review. I did not intentionally write with cruelty, however, perhaps you should set it aside for when you are ready to face some hard questions and bluntly negative assessments. I know I'm way behind, and you've already set these things in stone, but I wanted to give you a perspective on many of your readers might perceive your actions. First miss is (presumably) not an idiot. The assassin didn't go out and procure the poison on her own. First miss knows who made the decision, gave her trusted friend the poison and she knows that her baby's life and her own trust were not worth the bribe offered by her own family to her trusted friend. Li Huiyu is not an idiot either, but she has chosen to ignore the truth of her actions. If that wasn't bad enough, the ***** Zhang kept the reminder of the murderess right there under the same roof, serving her own sister! That's one cold-hearted, cruel swine that "loves her first daughter". Yikes, keep me away from that kind of 'love'! I get that you need the conflict for the plot and that this most likely sets up some redemption arc where Li Huiyu Does Not betray Yujia... and that will be great, I guess. But the cost to the primary characters is too high, and the fallout - the personal cost paid by the criminals is... well, it's non-existent. I recommend that the very least, every other servant should shun Li Huiyu. She should hear people hissing at her like the viper she is, a poisoner of children can be seen as nothing more than a snake. She has to enter the kitchens at odd hours because she will get 'bumped into' and a slew of other accidents that will ruin her ability to do her job. Thus, it's not others that prepare Yujia's food, but Li Huiyu must do it all herself because nobody in the household will lift a finger to help her. She has to fix a very specific diet because she has to use house funds to purchase and store them separately, or the ingredients she wants to use will be missing or incomplete. Perhaps this also explains why Yujia never attended family meals? Her friend, the one that told her about the red bean cakes, is brand new and they've only spoken in private. Li Huiyu has had to beg her not to let the others know that she speaks with her, and is forced into lying about how the others see her and to not mention her at all. Li Huiyu has, therefore, become very sneaky, very crafty in obtaining the materials, food and other needs of Yujia. By the way, I think it would have been good for you to explain why Li Huiyu changed her name after her murderous betrayal. Was it to hide her sins? Did the evil step-mother initiate it? Perhaps, if you have not answered these questions, you would consider including the information at some point. They could help others come to terms with this brutality. Where do I get my opinions? From your words: " "I— don 't even know how my brain worked back then. I didn't think of the consequences once I started feeding her the poison, but when all of it finally gathered together and ended the life of her child, that was when I began to comprehend that the cost of my actions was the life of one and the hatred of another. " " She "didn't know how her brain worked back then." Right. How does it work now? When does it change, and for what price? She "didn't think on the consequences" of poisoning a pregnant woman. Right. Systematically murdering a child over a period of weeks (months?) is rather an easy thing to gloss over in your day to day life... unless you have the ability to think about your actions. Li Huiyu either is intelligent enough to know she's choosing to betray a friend and murder a child or she's a fairly simple-minded fool who is easy to coerce. You can't have it both ways. But you gave us the answer to that question when First miss described Li Huiyu as the smartest servant in the household. Therefore Li Huiyu knew EXACTLY what she was

Did you just say *foreshadowing*? That gives me the chills on what will happen when Hui'er's given a chance to meet her family or a chance for betrayal o.o Storywise though, it's a compelling piece. Even the side characters have a deep and complicated, so I'm quite intrigued. Looking forward to hear of the First Miss, she's been through a lot x.x.

Ughh something is really bugging me here. I get the whole no black and white but gray characters thing but I can't feel sincerity from her since a few chapters ago she said something like "i thought the 1st miss has let go of the past" like it was a revelation WHAT DO YOU MEAN LETTING GO OF THE PAST when the murderer of her baby (betrayer btw) is still living well under the same roof. I don't know.. the way this has been brought up just doesn't seem right, she clearly did a great wrong but still depicted as "good" and I feel like we should just forgive her because she was young and threatened, it would have been ok if she suffered real consequences or if we could feel more sincerity (ugly crying doesn't count). Well, these parts are quite hard for me to read so maybe I'll just skip the parts on this aspect of the story.

Love how this brings the complexity of humans. In reality there will always be gray areas...it's not all black and white. Sometimes people are faced with choices that are not always easy to make since either choice will result in a terrible consequence. It's even harder to realize what the consequences of such actions will be when a child is forced to make a decision, no matter how smart the said child is perceived. Even adults not always make the best decisions in life. A person will gain wisdom from previous experiences. Especially when an action done in the past results in great remorse. All the previous choices and consequences, be it good or bad, will help a person grow. I really look forward to the growth development of the characters.

Most emotional chapter. I cried and angered both. I suggest to appro2ahain the First Miss and tell her mother was involved so it will be punished or atleast will know why they killed the child. Wait Madam Zhang is really biological mother of her?

...cotd Li Huiyu has cried big ugly tears - but for what reason? Forgiveness comes at the cost of repentance. When has the murderess repented? Well, people usually repent when they see that their crime has real consequences. What were the consequences of her crime? Nothing. She herself was betrayed by the lying ***** Zhang, but past that, she still has the role of an honored servant... an easy life... even a new name to absolve her of the crimes of her true self. Yujia can gamble on the word of a betrayer and blindly trust the motives of an assassin. It's too much for me. I think I'll find something else to read... maybe my emotions will settle and let me come back, but the story has lost something essential now, a certain joy that the innocent characters brought with them has been irrevocably blackened. Yes, that's life. But life is blackened enough right now without poisoned babies and betraying friends - and the looming threat that it could happen again at any time. Good luck, M
