Ves is nolonger under the snooping eyes of the MTA, and the Five Scrolls Compact Earth fraternity is out looking for traces of Gaia which may lead them to him. Secondly, he needs to win enough MTA credits to take his children to the god pilot for the genetic aptitude change.

Mastery without time lost or Modification to someone Genetics Aptitude, that's worth 1,000,000,000 MTA's Credits. If we look at it it should be the Masteries without too much hesitation. Ves will over complicate it easily. A one time benefit to someone else vs a multiple occasions benefit for yourself, that could help you buy that one time benefit from somewhere else.
