WARNING: A CONSTRUCTIVE, DETAILED REVIEW ***TLDR/overall thoughts at the end*** Reading the synopsis, I quickly realized the potential of the novel. Seeming different from the countless novels of the same genre, I expected it to NOT follow through with the same old tropes. And I wasn’t too disappointed with that expectation. The author clearly has a way with words that allows them to completely catch the attention of the reader from the get-go. During the exposition of the novel, the reader was allowed the basic understanding and knowledge of the novel’s world and its characters. However, I believe that the author, somehow, got carried away not with the flow of the plot, but with the rapid introductions and developments of new characters. With each new minor supporting characters, the reader can quickly become overwhelmed. I would not have had a problem with the many new minor characters if I was able to remember who was who each time they would be brought up. I find it concerning when the comments under a novel are questioning the identity of many of the characters in it. On the topic of characters, many of them were, unfortunately, one dimensional (maybe two which is pushing it). They either want to kill her for some insignificant matter, or they’ll either offer to sacrifice their lives for her (when they don’t even know her). While I’m not trying to put down the hard work of the author, I feel as if time in the novel didn’t make sense. The first time I realized this was when Gu Ruoyun’s (GRY’s) father, Gu Tian, stated that he hasn’t seen his daughter for twenty years and that he never had the chance to name her, she herself was around the age of twenty-one or twenty-two at the time so it doesn’t make sense. However, one can tell that this isn’t the case, since he must have been there when Dongfang Yu, his wife, gave birth to GRY; since they both went missing together. From what I can remember as well, later on in the novel, GRY remained within the same age range, even though she’s been through many time leaps. Another example of an inconsistent timeline can be experienced in the side story of Qianbei Xun (GRY and QY, Qianbei Ye’s) son. The reader knows that he was confirmed to be about two years after his birth that his mother exited cultivation. GRY enters cultivation once again, leaving Xun waiting another two years for her, making him four years old. The next time we hear about Xun is in his side story, about ten years after the novel’s events, leading me to believe that is is about fourteen to fifteen years old. However, the author gives him the impression of a young *****, about nineteen years of age, describing his as a “peerless man.” In the novel, QY also confirms Xun’s *****hood. And while I am aware of the fact that this is a historical novel; in ancient China, the age of eighteen was considered the age of *****hood. The novel also leaves questionable situations. Like how was GRY eventually supposed to lead all of the different locations that she rules? How is her son supposed to in the future? But what really irks me was the abrupt conclusion of the novel. What happened to the other main characters, like her brother? TLDR: The novel was bombarded with an unnecessary amount of characters (who barely had any personality), power levels, settings, and finished abruptly leaving readers to wonder about the outcome of the other main characters. Essentially a pleasant read, for someone who has nothing else to read. But for others who have a load of other novels to start, don’t bother.
