Romance on the side... It should be kept in mind that madness is usually a coping mechanism. Something that arises from a traumatic experience that the person doesn't want to accept. I usually don't want to explain things or give definitive answers in comments as the work should do that on its own but... Romance is definitely not on the side. I did gather that his coping mechanism was going mad considering every time something bad happens he gets all jittery and mumbling but that doesn't change the fact that it is ultra entertaining to see him just losing the last pieces of his shattered psyche while trying to keep a relationship stable and failing
